I think suicide is a sin, but the point of Christianity (my religion) is that we are forgiven of our sins through Christ's awesome sacrifice. We all sin, so the sin of suicide doesn't change anything. If the person committing suicide is a Christian, he or she will go to heaven. If not, he or she will go to hell.

Suicide is a waste. I believe in an afterlife, and I think anyone who dies will go there, including suicides.
skalite5 is incorrect. Atheists are not a part of the group that doesn't believe in an afterlife, but some people who don't believe in an afterlife are atheists. Buddhists are a large group of atheists who DO believe in a kind of afterlife - at least reincarnation.

The word "murder", to me, sounds like something cold-blooded and indicates malicious intention. I think most people commit suicide because they are hurting or afraid, I don't see it as being an "evil" act.
I'm a Christian, and I believe that Heaven is the reward for believers and that "hell" is just the grave, eternal non-existence. It depends on the nature of that person's heart, and whether or not they have a relationship with Jesus. There is only one unforgivable sin listed in The Bible ... and suicide isn't it. I personally feel that suicide would be forgiven just as any other sin can be.

No, it is suicide. Hence the need for a word to differentiate. As an Atheist, I don't believe in an afterlife so that answers that.
To the answerer who said, "Atheists aren't a group" you are technically correct, although the new atheist movement headed by men like Dawkins and Harris has organized us into a coalition of sorts, the anti-religious equivalent to the various religious coalitions. We share a roughly common belief system and unite in fighting religious idiocy.

Suicide isn't murder. Murder is a legal term, and it is generally defined as one person killing another person.
I don't believe in an afterlife; I have no reason to think people go anywhere after death. They just kinda lie there. :P

Why would you direct that at atheists? If you don't believe in an afterlife (a group of which atheists are a part) then suicide is suicide. Murder is killing someone else, suicide is killing yourself, black and white.

I do believe suicide is murder. As for where a person's soul will go is God's call, not mine.

Suicide is not murder, because it's the person's own choice. I believe their afterlife will be how they believe it will be like.

You did not give yourself life, so it is not right for you to take your own life. Considering we don't know if that person prayed and asked forgiveness before they took their life, the answer varies. If the person was a non-believer Hell is the probable place. If they were a believer, it is very sad they lost their way. In this case i don't know, but i believe if you are truly saved then you are always saved. With that being said they immediatly would have been in the presence of God.

I am Christian. The remainder of my response should be read under the presumption that I am speaking from a Christian viewpoint. Please don't flame or blast me for being a Christian. That won't serve any purpose.
I think it is a great tragedy that the Christian church has taught for years that suicides go to hell. This mistake has come from the presumption that Judas went to hell. I don't doubt that Judas is in hell. Jesus said, "It would have been better for him if he had not been born," which is a clear indication to me that he is in hell.
However, I don't think it's because Judas killed himself. I believe it is because he betrayed Jesus and did not ask for forgiveness. He did not repent. He did not believe that Jesus could save him from that sin. As a contrast, Peter, who denied Christ three times, went out and wept bitterly, realized he needed Jesus' forgiveness, and believed in it.
Going back to suicides, I believe that God "hard-wires" in each and every person a will to live. When Satan interferes with that, through depression, mental illness, or other alteration of one's "normal" state, that person is no longer sanely in control of his or her faculties. "To say that God would damn that person to hell because they were overcome by the Devil would be the same as saying that it is somehow a man's own fault that he was robbed in the woods by a robber," said Martin Luther. I tend to agree.
