in our new home, a central warming system is in place. could someone pls tell us how that works? is it warmer than central heating? will it cause asthma? does it affect the walls in the house? is there any difference at all?

yes! there are some kinda of vents or something in every room.

It is a radiant heating system and in my opinion the absolute best system you can have. Central heating systems rely on moving air to heat and moving air can cause drafts which feel cold even if the air moving is warm. Radiant systems heat the air directly much the way your fireplace does. Also because no air is moving these systems are far better for asthma suffers. You should be very happy with it as long as the installer put it in correctly.

Are there small holes fairly high up on some of the walls?

If so, this is a relatively new, to U.S., heating system. There are pipes in the walls and floors that give off heat, like a radiator, in fact I think it is also known as radiant heating.

This system will not cause asthma, and is usually found only on expensive homes. I'm told many people like this system because the floors are warmer to walk on in cooler weather.
