smoke detectors use an ionized chamber to detect the ionization. A gas sensor is chemical designed for that particular gas. H2S is a very bad poisonous gas and the sensor produces a chemical reaction with just that gas.The reaction will produce a very small electric current. the meter will amplify the signal and give u an accurate reading. Some gases have a cross reaction and so u need to know what u are dealing with.
