I'm 21, going to college part time and will be working as a cashier if I get the job.
Thanks for everyone's answers so far. I'll probably wear black slacks, a nice shirt, but what about shoes? all i have are black sandals and boots.

Something formal. You should treat every interview seriously. You don't need a full suit or anything, but maybe some nice business slacks and shirt.

I have found that the best way to dress for the interview, depends on the type of position you are interviewing for.
For example, If you are interviewing for cashier, nice slacks/skirt with a polo shirt would work well, and wear sensible shoes (I was hired for the job I hold now, my boss told me recently, because I was the only applicant who showed up in sensible shoes.) Make sure that your clothes, whatever your choices, are clean and pressed. And my #1 rule for job interviews is "Eye contact, be confident, and SMILE"

Good Luck!

Dress professionally. Remember, the way you look is how people see you. Every employer in the world is looking for employees that don't need to be baby sitted. If you arrive at an interview dressed like you mean business, the employer can assume you will be a good hard working professional person. Dress like a high school kid(that's ok at high school or college) and the employer will look at you as a high school kid. Think like a potential employer and be professional.

This truly works!

It's more about grooming than clothes, but try the following. Simple dress, skirt and blouse, or pants and blouse, perhaps with a jacket or light swearter. Dress modestly with your upper arms covered. No cleavage, no skin around your middle showing, no tight jeans, and closed toe shoes.
You want to look neat, clean, pressed, and professional. If you have long(ish) hair, make sure it is tied back and any bangs are not in your eyes. Go easy on the make-up and do not wear perfume.
(If you are going to work around food or as a cashier, an employer wants someone who isn't going to be swiping at their hair to see or before they handle food or money. Perfume can compete with food smells. Too, some customers are sensitive to perfumes as they can trigger headaches.)

What ever interview you go to... always wear black!!! Black shows you have confidence (its a power colour)...

Males should wear black pants, black shoes, and a button and collar shirt - the shirt don't have to be black but any dark colour will do.

Females should try to look classy and not Goth! so an above the knee skirt and stunning formal top will do wonders. (think of the image of an air hostess).

Confidence will be the key to your interview - and if you look confident with you clothes - it will help you nail the deal.

It depends on how old you are and which position you're applying for.

If you're in high school and applying for a cashier position, wear khakis and a nice button up shirt or a polo. Don't wear any earrings or large jewelry. Shower and smile!

If you're applying for a manager position, you should already know the answer to this question.

What you would wear to any job interview...professional attire that advertises who you are. If you are conservative and professional, slacks and a blouse. If you are a 'partier' then something bright and lively.

They are hiring you - and you want to be as happy with them as they will be with you. To try and 'dress up' and give them the impression that you are someone different will do neither of you any good.

If they are looking for someone conservative and you are a 'partier' or they are looking for someone fun and creative and you are too conservative, the match will be bad and neither of you will be happy.

Nice choice of clothes...both power colors...shows confidence!
I would go with the boots over the sandals in case they have a closed-toe shoe policy.

the way a candidate dresses tells me how serious he is about the job he is interviewing for.
early in my career i remember a well qualified candidate interview in a nice shirt and short outfit. the person was hired only to be gone in a few weeks. they obviously didn't take the job seriously

I'd go with black pants and a casual shirt, NOT too casual though. You don't want to go over the top because its a grocery store but not too casual either.
