Perhaps its because you know which accusations they deserve and which ones they don't deserve.

Being agnostic just says you've become unsure of the faith you were raised in. You still have loyalties there because you can't abandon it with no doubts it would be the right thing to do. I suggest you search for the truth with a gusto. You might find that God and religion are two different things. It's important that you know Who God is and decide if you believe what He says. Go to the source, the Holy Bible, and you will either believe or reject the truth. As far as the Catholic religion, you'll have better insight about that and other denominations also.

Perhaps you have discovered something which I discovered long ago: Simply because I don't have the same beliefs as many people (in my case, about everyone) that does not mean that they are bad people - they might in fact be quite good people with whom I may not completely agree.
I go absolutely bonkers when confronted with organized religious rituals - plain and simple. I think I would rather walk down Park Avenue naked than participate in any. However, I realize that many people on this planet feel better and make their lives seem more complete by participating in blessings, prayer circles, baptisms, etc. More power to them....
Who am I to criticize? I have my own personal and private activities that some would call rituals myself - and believe absolutely in the power of prayer - in my own way. Big deal. I may not believe everything my family or friends do, but don't think they are doing anything wrong, either.
Let's face it: There are a lot of darn good people out there who are Catholics, aren't there? Why not defend them? Same with Mormons, and yes - even Muslims.... I could go on and on, but you get the point: One doesn't necessarily have to believe the same as other people to respect them and defend their right to believe like they do.
If everyone did the same as you seem to be doing, the world would definitely be a much better place, don't you agree? I defend your right to defend the Catholics! Keep it up!
:-)

It could be one of many things, and none of them healthy. It could be because;-
1. You are an egotistical maniac and take things too personally.
2. You are so confused by religion you can't see straight.
3. You exist in fear rather than in the harmonious vibrations of unconditional acceptance
4. You were dropped on your head as a child
5. You're trerrified of something you won't admit to yourself
6. You are lost in the dense vibrations of the logical mind and have no connection with your heart (same as 3 really)
No intention to offend here, but mate you gotta set yourself free, and only the truth can set you free. Go and seek it

It just might be a pride thing. Like changes alllegiences to another football team, but not wanting to see the old one lose. As long as your head is in the right place, your heart will follow. And insults are hard to take. You can disagree or have differing points of view without being nasty....unless it's warranted. ;)

Maybe it isn't Catholicism that you are defending, but rather you are wary of the abrasive and illogical arguments that people make against them. Lots of people put down Catholics or Christians in general, or even Muslims, agnostics, and atheists; and many of the people doing the putting down don't even know anything about the people they are putting down. Regardless of what you believe in or don't believe in, this is wrong. Perhaps it is this wrongness that you are fighting against, rather than defense of your former religion?
Just a theory. :-)

You may have whats called cognitive dissonance, which essentially means, you have an attachment to the parts of the religion you remember fondly, emotionally, even if intellectually you know its not the truth.
As an ex- catholic myself, I remember wel the christmass midnight mass , the first at our new cathedral, when I drunk teenager came up the grand stairs leading to the church, and yakked all over the steps in fromt of nicely dressed people. Three sisters quickly came to his aid, helped him up and were so kind and non-judgemental, "let us help you Ricky" I remeber the one nun saying in a loving and nonjudgemental voice. It would have ben easy to stare and talk down to him , but they were forgiving and caring, will always remember that.......

I have not have been given any concern with faith, I do have a concern that human beings use faith to justify guy's inhumanity to guy. faith is effective if it works for a individual. i'm no longer non secular yet I even have studied distinctive religions purely to get a greater suitable thought of the cultures linked with those religions. i'm no longer an atheist the two, i like the spirituality component of religion, having faith in something to greater suitable oneself and others. it is purely the appliance of a few religions look somewhat severe at circumstances.

I think it may still represent an older version of yourself and perhaps current loved ones.
Like when someone laughs at pictures of you as a kid...I defend Catholicism because I have family members of that faith...plus some attacks are simply ignorant and require education...

I'm agnostic, too, but I don't like people to make fun of others for their beliefs. I think the real issue is that you don't like people to be rude to each other. I enjoy watching people debate religious and philosophical issues, but I don't like cattiness and name calling.
