Sufis are the most appealing part of Islam for many westerners - rationality and non-violence. Straight Sunni Islam is most boring. Mind you thats not to say I think they have the right idea of God, its just a lot more pleasing than mainstream Islam. Whether the ecstatsy is because of communion with God or psychological manipulation I couldn't say. I couldn't come into the presence of God until I was forgiven, and that came from believing the christian salvation message.
One can doubtless experience love from God or other humans in many ways.
I have sometimes been very close to God, and have been graced by His love. The Holy Spirit communicates God's love (God the Father + Christ) to christians.
Romans 5:5 God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given us.
One time I was so intensely filled with God's presence that it was literally being filled with the most intense peace and joy - "joy unspeakable and full of glory".
Most of the time one just wants God's love in the sense of His active involvement in one's life.
