For a 3-1/2 year old, I'd recommend a car seat rather than a booster. In fact, many states require it unless the child is 4 years old and weighs at least 40 pounds (California does). Either way, you're better off buying a new one instead of used, unless you borrow or buy it from someone you know well, because if it's been in an accident it's useless to you, and if you buy it second hand, you have no idea what its history is. Target, K-mart, and Babies-R-Us have lots of different models, and many are pretty inexpensive.

You need to purchase a high back booster seat. You can get those anywhere starting at $20 and going way up from there.

There are companies that rent equipment. Check your local yellow pages. You can search consignment shops for inexpensive used booster seats, or try craigslist.com for used booster seats for sale.

Some local police and fire stations have car seat rentals for this exact purpose.

When getting a used carseat elsewhere, check that it hasn't been recalled or damaged.

Target has several inexpensive versions available.

You can buy them at walmart, target, or kmart for about $15. That way you aren't spending alot for just a couple of days or you could always check resale shops or garage sales.
