Yesterday I was given a job offer of $52,351 (random I know). Today I called them back after doing some research and said the average for my degree is $56,000-$58,000, and asked if there was any flexibility in the offer to come closer to this salary. The woman in HR said she would check and get back to me.
Now my dad is saying that they are probably checking to see if they can get the #2 or #3 candidate for cheaper than this- can they do that? Don't I have to formally decline first? If they came back and said that no, they cannot adjust the salary, I would accept it, I figured there was no harm in asking. But now I'm freaking out that they may retract the offer and offer it to someone else.

It's possible, but unlikely. You are their first choice, for whatever reasons, so likely she is only verfying if the initial pay can be brought closer to your figure. More than likely they will call you back and either hold firm on the 52,351 or make a upward adjustment. If you accept, great, if not, they'd go with one of the other applicants. Good luck! Yes, they can retract BUT based on your information, I would find it very unlikely that that would happen. People often ask for more money and you are not asking for a ridiculous amount more. My guess is that your request is being discussed and that the company will contact you shortly with a final offer that may or may not be different than the original offer.
DO NOT WORRY. Only a company run by jackasses or arrogant people would rescind an offer because you asked for 7% more than the original offer. In that case, I would suspect that you're better off finding another employer.
Finally, your dad is looking at things from a different place. He is interested in your security. Although this is important, I suspect it is more important to him than it probably should be to you at this stage in your life.

There is no contract involved, I assume. Never hurts to try and negotiate the salary. The company is not obligated to even call you back. Most companies are honorable and will get back with you. If you are so worried about it, call and accept offer.

How much are you worth in your career. I have a Dip in HRM and I can only advise you this way, which is my advise to anybody seeking a job. Know your worth and go for it. If you start off with a bad salary, you will live with that for a long time before they review it, six months or a year? If they want you, stick to your guns and let them give you what you are worth.

i'd say your dad is right...sorry. if they can get their #2 or #3 to work for the salary they want to offer, they'll call you and tell you that no, the salary is not flexible...since you haven't signed a contract or anything they do have the right to offer the job to someone else... while it is important to know your worth and not settle for less, you have to be prepared to stick to your guns about it...if you would've worked for the quoted salary anyway, you should've just accepted.

Listen to your dad. A lousy $52K is better than a really wonderful $0. Consider working for a company, proving your worth, then ask for more.
