Put in Ceramic til a couple years ago and it obviously doesn't go under my existing cabinets. How do I make it work if the new cabinets I select don't match exactly?

The depth of kitchen cabinets are pretty standard. If your new ones are deeper, you will need to shim the backs to level the cabinets. If they are not as deep, you will have to make up the difference with molding arond the bottoms.

Your question is a bit ambiguous. I am assuming that you don't want to replace the ceramic tile 'back splashes' but are wondering if it will 'look awful' if you put in new countertops and cabinets. Why should your 'cabinets' exactly match your 'ceramic tiles,' anyway. You must have chosen them for some reason ... the 'style' or their color, right? If it was 'style' then all you have to do is to try to get your cabinets and counter-ops in a same or 'similar' style ... if it's a color, then choose the cabinets and countertops in a 'complementary color. If the ceramic tiles are 'just too ugly for words' though, then you should be able to 'change' them ... even with a good coat of paint for now, and you can 'replace them' with something nicer at a later date. Try out several different 'combinations' using your computer (or one at the 'home improvement center' where you are buying the cabinets and countertops. Choose what YOU LIKE (or better, what you and your wife/partner both like) and forget about what 'other people' will think of it ... unless you are fixing up your kitchen in preparation to sell the house. It's not a good idea to 'fix up a kitchen' to help sell a house ... it would actually 'sell faster' if you just dropped the price by the amount of money you'd pay to fix it up, and leave that as a 'project' for the next owner to do if s/he wants to. So ... go 'shopping' and 'choose what you like' and you'll have a kitchen that you can at least 'live with' for the next 5-10 years ... or don't do anything, drop the price of the house a little, and move on ...

Add tile to the back splash or take out to make it fit. You can find a design that complements the design from your existing tile. They doesn't have to match exactly in texture and color. Maybe add a line in a darker color, forming a strip along your cabinetry. Check out Home Depot for ideas.

About the counter tops, it shouldn't affect your tile at all . You can change the counter tops without disturbing your existing tile.
