While on vacation in the Smoky Mountains, my husband was surprised to hear people honking when we drove through tunnels. I had heard of that before but I don't really know why people do it. Anyone know how it started or why?

In some places, tunnels are narrow enough that it is difficult, if not impossible, to pass an oncoming vehicle, so the honking of the horn is to let people on the other end know to be careful. Of course, this would only work if the tunnel were short enough.

If the tunnel has curves in it, it can also be a warning to anyone ahead of you that there is a vehicle coming along behind them. This can be useful especially if there is any pedestrian or bicycle traffic through the tunnel.

Of course, there is always the possibility that some people honk in a tunnel in order to hear the echoes of their horn. Go figure.

There's nothing wrong with having a little fun, is there? My mom used to roll down the window and honk, no matter the time of year, in the tunnels on the way to Sea-Tac Airport going through Seattle. Great fun...

sound reverberations from the honking of the horn are what support the tunnel as a vehicle passes through it. the strength of the arch is only as strong as the sound of the horn being blown underneath the arch, which exerts pressure on the walls and causes a tighter seal. this is the same reason bicyclists whistle or yell when they pass through tunnels, every bit of sound helps to reinforce the support. if the sound echos within the tunnel, you know it is safe to pass through as long as you continue to make the sound.

I regard it as a display of ignorance. Because a car horn sounds different in a tunnel some people are like a child with a new toy.
