All you yee-haws that think a 50 cal Barrett is the answer, you go try humping a 40 pound weapon through the desert. It sucks and the guns are not all that accurate. The cartridge would be effective in that range but you would need a custom gun to fire it, to make it a good sniper rifle. The .408 Chey-Tac is another round that has that kind of range. EDM is the company that manufactured the rifles for the Chey-Tac round. They are very expensive and ammo components are hard to come by. (ammo is almost impossible to buy, you must handload) The Ideal 2000m weapon would be a .338 Lapua Magnum. This round can be fired from a standard rifle platform with a long action. Guns can will not weigh much more then a normal rifle and recoil can be made manageable by porting the barrel. The round actually holds the record for longest kill, not the .308 as someone had said. It was a Canadian shooter who was set up with some US Marines. The shot was over 2400 meters. As for the .308 and 30/06 these rounds loose supersonic speed around 1100-1250 yards. From there spin drift can play hell on accuracy or the bullet could simply begin to tumble. They are not viable options for that range.

The CheyTac M200 CIV would be the best bet. It fires a .408 round developed for long range behond 1.5kms. Here in the real world, no typical centerfire cartrige in .308 or 30.06 is going to effectively get you there everytime. You may get lucky, but thats all it will be.
The .408 holds the world record for best groups at 2000+ yards. That being said, the CheyTac should be your best bet for consistant 2000+ metter shots.

I will add that the ammo is quite easy to come by as a matter of fact ! Here is just a link to one supplier that has several options !

Good Luck & Happy Shooting !

Like I said, here in the real world ! The .308 & 30.06 have a drift pattern after 1200 meters that can only be guessed at. In the hands of someone who is trained to the max, this becomes slightly better. Why dont you do an inquire of how many 1500+ meter no kills these guys have ? There is only one or two calibers that you can bet your life on hitting your target at that kind of range. All of those rifles are Cheytac rifles firing a .408, not a .308 or a 30.06. Like said above, the 50BMG is not a personel rifle. It has been used yes, but it was never ment to be. Its not very accurate after 1500 meters either !
Many of you live in the fairytail that snipers dont miss. Ofcourse this is mainly because of the media and movie industries. The .308 & 30.06 are 1200 meter and minus guns. You can push anything to do more than what it should, but why when you can buy something made to do it ?

traditionally, a sniper rifle is a model of rifle that has been tweaked for range, accuracy, and scope mounting. Kinetic energy delivered at the desired range is also important. The parts are of a higher quality than a regular weapon, with usually tighter tolerances. But any rifle can be made into a 'sniper' rifle by the application of a scope and use for skilled shots to, well, kill people. That is a sniper rifle's intended purpose: kill people with one shot from a great distance. And the popular term (if a little PC) in now marksman, not sniper.

A .50 caliber rifle is not a sniper rifle. It is an anti-materials rifle. While sniper teams use them, they do not use them for the purpose of sniping.
From the American Hertiage Dictionary:
"Sniper - A skilled military shooter detailed to spot and pick off enemy soldiers from a concealed place."
Standard conventions of war prohibit shooting human targets with .50 caliber ammunition. The Barret's are designed instead for shooting at light vehicles and other non-human targets. Get out of your videogames and into the real world. Yes, you could shoot someone with it, but there are better alternatives.
Both the US Army and the US Marines use a rifle based on Remington's Model 700 (M24 Sniper Weapon System and M40A3 respectively) chambered for the 7.62 NATO round (.308 Winchester). The main changes include a free floating barrel to increase accuracy, military optics (read as EXPENSIVE), and the barrel is a Schneider 610 /24-inch (25-inch), 5-groove, 1:12" match-grade heavy barrel. The M24 SWS has a long action, in case the Army decides to upgrade to a larger round, and the M40A3 uses the short action. I believe the ammunition is house tuned in Quantico. Their "effective" range is about 1500m I believe, but a skilled marksman can hit well over that.
Out of the box, a Remington Model 700 is one of the most accurate rifles you can buy. You just won't be able to SEE your target at 2000m without superb optics.
**To MRS**
I agree with you about an out of the box .308 Winchester round or rifle, but why don't we ask Carlos Hathcock if that round can reliably hit targets at that distance?

the 50 cal is the only one and white feather used a win model 70 in 30-06 for his longest non 50 cal kill not a 308 .Theres nothing wrong with a 308 but his shot on the general was an 06.the 308 will outpreform the 06.There was a sniper in the USMC in RVN that had far more kills than Carlos he was with the 5th marines and his name is Chuck Mawhenny with 103.

Longest sniper shot in Iraq to date was just around 2000m with a .308 M24. I prefer the old M21 myself. Good all around gun. And I hate the new so-called 'first semi-auto sniper' the M110. Basically a souped up M16

The Single Shot Barrett (can't remember the model number) .50 BMG
Their barrels meet Mil-Spec which requires minute of angle accuracy at 2500 meters.
Unless you are military, or long range target shooter, why would you want one of these critters? Most states ban them for hunting, and shooting game at such ranges is unsporting in my opinion.
BTW, Californian and some other states have already banned or restricted .50 BMG rifles. So check with your Attorney General's office before trying to guy one.

While technically not a sniper rifle, this weapon can do serious at 2000m, even if you miss by a little.

Barritt has some nice rifles to choose from if you don't mind coming up with several dollars a shot to shoot it. They are all 50 cal. but they are the best choices for 1000m and up.
