How can i tell if my pitbull (show type) is pure breed?

me and my wife just bought a pitbull pup... and because pitbull is new breed to us, how can i tell if this puppy is pure breed?

Pit bull is a general term that includes several different breeds. So no you pit bull is not pure pit bull (show quality)

The American Pit Bull Terrier is not a breed recognized by the AKC, regardless of what the moron cobraman says. (Go and check at www.akc.org).

The American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier ARE AKC recognized breeds, but they are NOT the same thing as an American Pit Bull Terrier.

The UKC DOES recognize the breed, and registers them. If your dog is supposedly "show quality", you should have gotten it's registration papers from the breeder and there should be no need to prove anything - being registered proves that it is a purebred.

If the breeder did not give you papers, then the dog is not registered, there is no way to prove it's purebred (and it may not be) and it is not show quality.

If you've just been had by a con artist breeder, I'm sorry.. but you should have done more research.

Well, first of all a "pit bull" isnt a breed. "Pit bull" is a term that some people use to describe American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers. I dont know much about showing dogs but I do know that if you are going to show an American Pit Bull Terrier you have to call it an American Staffordshire Terrier (they arent the same breed but they are very similar)... I am not sure if you can show a Staffordshire Bull Terrier as a Staffordshire Bull Terrier or if you have to show it as an American Staffordshire Terrier???... But like I said I dont know much about showing dogs so if I were you I would got to the AKC website.. its www.akc.org and see what you can find out from there. As far as proving that you dog is a certain breed you really need to have a pedigree or papers on the dog. I do think that there is some kind of blood test that your dog can get to tell you if its pure bred or not and what breed it is, but it is probably pretty expensive...

Staffordshire Terrier, English Bulldog, English Bull Terrier and mabye a few others are recognized by AKC/UKC etc. This will say so on their kennel papers.

OK you DID get papers with him, didn't you? If he's a show-type dog I assume you bought from a proper breeder and not from some backyard hooligan.

That said, the Pit Bull is not a breed - but a catchall name for several dogs of a "type."

They are known for loyalty, human companionship (believe it or not) strength and intelligence. Therefore it is imperative that this kind of dog be trained in obedience and well socialized. They are indeed quite smart and incredibly willing to do anything for praise. Good family dogs, too. Just as long as they are well socialized and properly trained.

Many people get this type of dog and use them for blood sport (illegal in many countries). This is quite sad as the training methods are cruel and evil.

Still more people don't socialize their dogs well - which leads to their unfortunate reputation as biters.

so take puppy to obedience classes and socialize him well - you'll have an excellent family pet.

As a pup, it's tough to say whether or not you will have a show quality dog until it is about 6-9 months old depending on how quickly he matures. Then you have to assess how close your dog is to the breed standards and determine if he/she is show quality or not. If the dame and sire are show quality, than the pup will more often than not follow in their footsteps.

the only way to tell is if you have its papers... this is why the AKC exists. The papers provide a family tree that can be traced to original breeds when the standards for them were first set.
DNA testing does not work because all dogs are the same species... the only difference is physical appearance.

If it is to be shown then it must have AKC paperwork. Should have come from the breeder. If not you can't show it, and it may or may not be a pure breed. You can go to the AKC website and check out the breed standards. Even pure breeds are disqualified if they don't meet those standards.
