With or without a religion (separation of church and state) doesn't everyone just do the best they can with their jobs, with their families and friends, with life in general?

Two of the world's great religions, at least, require proselytizing. They not only believe what they do is right, but that everyone else should do it too. So they get committed to converting others.

The problem is, very few people want to be converted. They either like what they grew up with, or they went through some intellectual and emotional turmoil to decide upon something which suits them better.

So why do we discuss religion at all? Partly because we can indeed learn from one another. If you understand more about what someone else believes, or at least has been brought up to believe, you can do business with them without offense, you can understand the art work and culture of their country, and appreciate it more. And for some of us, we can learn things that have the ring of truth in them, even if we don't want to convert.

Ridicule and mockery do not help any of this, of course.

BTW, I count atheism as a belief, just as any religion or spiritual pathway is. A person who believes in materialism believes something, even if it is in the form of a negative. Saying "there is no god" is saying that you are on your own, you must develop your own moral code, and you cannot look to supernatural sources when you get in trouble. I can respect that, even if I don't agree.

People are "obsessed" here because it is the Religion and Spirituality section. That is what we think about when we are on this site.

Except for christians, who tend to be busybodies and butt into other people's lives trying to get more converts that will make them feel less unsure.
