During my 10 years as an officer in the Army, the majority of young lieutenants want to learn about what it takes to be a more successful officer. I would suggest books on leadership, history or previous successful military leaders (Schwarzkopf, Powell, Marshall, etc). Just my $.02.

Is she becoming a 2nd lieutenant in OCS? If so, many craft stores a.k.a. Micheals & I think WalMart have really nice scrap books with the Army symbol on the front (it is a metal symbol) - I gave my son one for his wife to do (he will hardly write home much less scrapbook.
It is a great book to keep all promotion pictures, papers thoughts of the day in.
A piece of jewelry or with our Congress her own gun & bullets.

Being in a male dominated environment, she would probably really enjoy some girly time. Like maybe a day at a spa or something (assuming of course that she isn't deployed).
