Mouse poison is basically a anticoagulant. If the mouse doesn't have to squeeze through any tight holes the poison won't work.
I have live trapped mice before, but they may come back...so try this it has never failed me yet. Just a word of advice. If it does already have a nest of babies the babies will die and you will smell them.
Get an old fashioned snappin' mouse trap and use peanut butter. The peanut butter is sticky and it takes more for the mouse to get it off the trap and snap....hopefully the mouse dies fast other wise it will drag its paralyzed body acrossed the floor as it tries to get away.

DONT USE POISON OR MOUSE TRAPS!!Mice are easier to catch with a mouse trap than are rat, especially because they are curious explorers who will be eager to inspect a mouse trap. If you are uncomfortable by the idea of killing one, there are mousetraps, called "live traps" that simply shut in a mouse, so that it can then be released outside.
Most live traps consist of a platform on which you place food to lure the mouse. Once the mouse steps on the platform, the weight of animal triggers the door to shut, thereby trapping the mouse. You can then carry the trap outside and release the still living mouse.
The best food source for luring mice is peanut butter.
Place traps along the edge of room, around where you last saw the a mouse, or near areas where you have found mouse droppings.

Without using traps or poison A very effective deterrent

Make sure the traps are parallel to the wall, so that when a mouse is scampering along the edge of the room, they will notice the opening of the trap.
I advise using multiple traps, even if you suspect only one mouse. They will increase your chances of capturing the mouse. Otherwise, with one trap, you may wait for days before the mouse discovers the trap. Live traps tend to be more expensive than those traps that kill the mouse.
The number of traps you use depends on the size of your apartment. Mice range from two to three inches long and can squeeze through the holes as small as a quarter-inch! They are also incredibly fast, so itâ€â¢s difficult to keep them out of rooms. If you can, try to place one in each large room. If you can only afford one trap, then, of course, set it in the kitchen area.
If the mousetrap is empty after a day, the mouse may have found a new home. However, if you still suspect a mouse, then try moving the trap around.
Mice run around at night, and they like to eat around dusk or dawn, so be sure to check in the morning for any captured critters.

This as good a category as any, so, do not worry.
If, the poison not working. Use the traps as you mention. Bait with some Peanut Butter. Place along walls or under cabinets. When you do catch a mouse, wash the trap with hot water and dry, then re-bait. Eventually you may stop catching mice, try a new location to be sure, and, if you not catch anymore they gone. Also, if she have a garage, put one there. Another trap you can try is those "Sticky Pads" it should say for mice and about 3x5 inches square. Only problem is the mouse be stuck and still alive. It harder for me as I love life, and seeing them on the pad squeaking kinda hard. But, we have to do what we have to do, I guess.
The link is "Victor" traps and this give some instructions on using various traps.

Try a "Havahart" trap. This is the kind that does not kill the animal, just traps it. It is the most humane method of removing an animal, and it also ensures that you will not have dead animals rotting in your walls (eww!).
Load one end with a piece of American cheese, peanut butter, and some peppermints, or whatever foods you have that smell good and won't go bad too quickly. Then set the trap along walls, dark corners, and tight spaces where you've seen the mouse or mouse droppings. Mice don't like to run across open areas of floor. Prop one of the doors up on its prop, and put the food in the other end, so that the mouse has to walk across the trigger platform in the middle to get the food.
I just caught a mouse in my apartment this way. The mouse was caught within a week. I took him and released him in a forest nearby. Good luck!

I use a tall bucket or trash can and put a little strong smelling food in the bottom (cat foor or peanut butter) and put it next to a high counter or say the wash machine. That way it's easy for them to get in, but they can't get back out. Put a lid on the bucket or trash can and take it far from where you live.

the best way is mouse traps. don't put them out in the open, mice don't scurrie around the middle of your kitchen, they stay right up against the wals, so put the traps there, and mice love peanut butter balls!!!!!!!!!!

My family once had a chipmunk in our house that we could not get out so we bought some sticky rat/mouse paper and it worked great. It is very sticky so if you do use it make sure that you don't get anything you don't want on it to touch it.
