but the non-believer thinks it has to do with the person's state of mind, do you call a psychiatrist or a priest?

Possession does occur, but it's far less common than delusions and hallucinations caused by mental illness. However, if the person is convinced he/she is possessed, then I'd ask a priest to counsel them first -- simply because they would reject psychiatric evaluation out-of-hand but respond to the presence of the priest, who could more successfully guide them to seek medical assistance if that's what they need.

Call a priest. All priests take classes in psychology as part of their education. If the person is not possessed and merely has emotional problems, the priest can help.

If the person is truly possessed, a psychiatrist would be of no use.

if the afflicted person is Catholic, they might respond better to a priest than a shrink. Whatever works best for the person involved.

A priest, that would be more relevant to the person possessed. What they believe to be true, IS true for them...

Have your friend call a priest he can confide in with confidence. Your friend needs to be prayed over, prayers and faith - then, maybe a counselor.

Psychiatrist.

Unless maybe I think they just need the priest to tell them they have been cleansed. If I thought that would work, I might try it first. It's all psychological.

It depends how dangerous they are.

Psychiatrist.
Please, don't do anything to hurt this person in any way.
Let them be taken care of by medical professionals.

I'd try to convince them to see a psychiatrist, of course.

Even the Church would require a psychological evaluation.
