There are many possibilities, depending on her age and other health conditions she may have. Where the fluid is collecting in the abdomen will give a clue to the origin. The fluid could also explain the UTI's and the pain she is experiencing. The doctor will do some more examinations to determine the cause of the fluid. He may also prescribe some medication to help her drain the extra fluid. When the amount of fluid decreases, her discomfort should decrease.

There are many reasons for fluid to accumulate in the abdominal cavity such as:
1.cirrhosis of the liver
2. hepatic (liver) vein occlusion
3. Kidney disease
4. Congestive heart failure
5.constrictive pericarditis
6. nephrotic syndrom with protein loss
7. Ovarian disease
8. Cancer
9.pancreatic inflammation

Scary, but none of these is likely to apply to your mother. Instead, it sounds like your mom's fluid could be due to her kidneys not functioning correctly due to the kidney stones. I had small amounts of fluid in my abdomin when I was having kidney stones as well. When the kidneys are not getting rid of fluid the way they should, it can accumulate in different parts of the body. It would not be unexpected. As long as your mom is being monitored by the doctor, I would not be concerned. My fluid issues resolved when my stones resolved. Hope this helps.

Make sure you ask the Doctors a million questions. It could be anything. If they drain the fluid they usually do lab work to see where it is coming from. Make sure if possible you get 2 opinions. It's nice to see that you are there for your Mother.

there really is no way of knowing but it could be serious. my step sister was born with a heart deformity. due to this, she gets a lot of fluid build up around her heart. so much so that it goes into her abdomen and she looks pregnant. she technically has congestive heart failure but this is just one thing that can cause the fluid. it doesn't mean your mom has it. i hope she finds out what's going on.
