when we come down, we are wanting to stay close to the subway and/or train to take us downtown and to Turner Field. And suggestions?

The recommendation of Wingate at 6 Flags is useless. MARTA is very inconvenient from that location.

The Best Western at the Peachtrees was a good recommendation. It's close to MARTA and right in the middle of town. There are a number of hotels in Midtown as well (around the 10th Street area). A good hotel for Braves games is the Holiday Inn Select in Capitol Avenue. It's about a 10-minute walk from the stadium and a 5-minute walk from the state capitol. You have to pay for parking in the hotel's secure lot, but overnight parking costs about the same as Braves stadium parking anyway.

If you see any good deals in Buckhead (near Lenox Mall), MARTA is still convenient and you would also be close to lots of shopping & restaurants. There are a lot of hotels in prices ranging from moderate (Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn) to expensive (JW Marriott, Intercontinental, Grand Hyatt).

There is a Holiday Inn Select in downtown Decatur with an indoor pool. You would walk about 3-4 minutes to Decatur MARTA, which is simple and convenient. Downtown Decatur has a great character, too.

Another area to consider: There are several moderately-priced hotels in the northern suburbs on Peachtree-Dunwoody Road (Microtel, Extended Stay Deluxe, La Quinta, etc.). This is near Perimeter Mall, and the area is safe. It's a 3-4 minute drive to Medical Center, Dunwoody, or Sandy Springs MARTA stations (with free parking for up to 24 hours). The MARTA train takes 25 minutes to Five Points from there.

And finally, you could consider an airport hotel (especially on the weekends). You could take the hotel's shuttle to the airport and then take MARTA from there. I know someone who always stays at the airport when he comes to Atlanta for medical appointments. He says he gets great deals online. But there is nothing to see or do by the airport, so you will spend more time driving or taking MARTA back and forth to interesting places.

I stayed at the "Best Western Inn at the Peachtrees" in downtown Atlanta in March.
Nice, clean, reasonably priced hotel in a good downtown location right beside the Marta train station.

Any of the downtown hotels will be good, as they're all close to a MARTA station. You can also take MARTA directly from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Just letting you know:
I'm from Detroit, and I LOVE big cities. (I'm moving to New York).
I'm also the kind of person who has to see and do everything and experience everything. I don't turn back easily. Bums and weird people on the streets don't bother me. I figure they can't hurt me. I don't get scared easily. HOWEVER! I went to Atlanta, walked four blocks, turned back around and left. I thought it was going to be a warm, fun city with an exciting downtown.

I was very wrong.

It was all crackheads, lunatics -- walking around literally talking to themselves about beating themselves up. I'm not exaggerating. It was TRASH. Sirens were everywhere. It was dreary. Garbage was everywhere. I was very dissappointed.

I've never been to Miami, but what I imagine Miami to be like, is how I sort of imagined Atlanta.

Go to Miami! :) haha.

Stay in Midtown or right downtown so you won't have far to travel. Check out their transit systems website to connect you. Ask your concierge. Check out the Underground, Centennial Park, Coca Cola, CNN and Buckhead for nice restaurants and nightlife you can just walk around to at night.

check out citysearch.com for the happenings and their tourism site, enjoy.
