My dog follows if you get up to go anywhere but when it comes to the kitchen he's shamelessly desperate and tap dances on the floor watching your every move and he tackles any approaching cat so they can't move in on anything that may hit the ground. When you eat he sits at your feet and drools like a faucet. You figure dogs eat the same bland food daily and have super strong sense of smell, so your pizza that smells so good smells probably 50 times better to them. The best thing to do is ignore him and don't give him any scraps because one success on his part will only encourage him (which I am oh so guilty of). If he's bothersome, put him outside or behind a closed door with his own food as to emphasize "yours" and "mine".

When my dog was a puppy we set a boundary in the kitchen that he was not allowed to cross - the floor went from carpet to tile. Anytime he crossed the line we told him Out. We had to keep up with it but it did work and he does not come into the kitchen....well, he usually doesn't come into the kitchen and when he does we tell him "out" and he knows to back out of the kitchen.
I don't know if you can teach an old dog new tricks but this is what worked for me and it's been a blessing. I was always afraid he'd get splashed with something hot and get burned.
Good luck.

I have a min poodle and he does the same thing.... it drives me crazy!... Good little sweeper he is though..... If i drop anything,. BAM - he's on it.. kind of convienent to tell you the truth..... I've come close to eating the floor a couple of times cause he gets right up under you. What I did was buy a kiddie gate and put it up in the entrance to the kitchen so he doesn't have access to it anymore while i'm cooking. He also gets fed at that time and when were eating, he goes into his kennel( he is kennel trained) that way, he's not right there begging. Its been working pretty good. and when were done eating, since he's a puppy and still house training, i take him out to go after were done eating, by that time his food is digested and he has to go, so 3 training tools in one!!!! GO ME!

My dog does it every time I cook too. I can see a look in his eyes praying that I drop something. And if I stand at the stove for a couple of minutes he'll just plop right down at my feet. One of these times I'm gonna end up buring my hands off because he's tripped me. lol. If you don't like him doing it I suggest feeding him dinner while you're cooking or getting some "baby gates" and blockading him out of the kitchen while you're cooking/eating. good luck.

"We hardly ever give him table scraps..." That says it all right there. We gave our Jake (pit bull mix) a bite one time from the table. It took over a year to break him of the begging habit after that.
When our Sally (black lab) was a baby, she would sit on the rug in front of the stove while my sister was cooking. 11 years laters she still sits on the rug. She will scoot when asked and that's the end of it.
I have more of a problem with our Toby (black long haired cat) following me around in the kitchen. He talks the entire time. Come to think of it, he follows me everywhere I go, much the same way our old Sam did. They just love their mum!

The one to the left has to be between me and the counter at all times. There are five dogs and a small kitchen so the all stand around watching waiting for something to drop.

I have a japanese chin, and yes, if there is food involved, she is THERE. She follows me all the time, when she isn't chasing after my husbands heels. But when there is food, she is much more intense. If we do not eat at the table, like if we are in the living room watching tv, it is a constant battle. She jumps up in my lap and does her best to get a bite. I have to put her down, and she tries her luck with my husband. Then the whole ritual starts again. I always make sure she has feed her when we eat, it just doesn't matter. She doesn't want her food if she can get a little morsel of ours.

Of course! Sweetums wants to be with HER human! He also wants treats - he's a dog after all. But mostly he wants to be with his human.
My Baby Blue is always under foot. In the kitchen, outside, in the shower (he'll come into the shower) It's normal and I love it.
But some people would rather Sweetums be somewhere else when preparing meals. And that's ok too.
Crate training is the most successful answer. Train him to go to his crate when you're busy or away from home etc. Talk to your vet, groomer or a good obedience trainer for ways to crate train him. It's a good thing.

Yes.
I have 2 dogs and they both fallow me around the kitchen.
And let me tell you our kitchen is not that big but our dogs are.
One is a black lab Shepperd mix and the other is a golden lab Shepperd mix.
I've often tripped over them.
so when I cook you can hear a lot of tricksey, Daisey get the hell out of my kitchen!!!

My dog does it all the time. He has done it every since he was 3mths old. He is just wanting to be near you. My dog thinks he is getting something everytime I start to cooking. He eventually gets tired of following me around and just sits by the back door.
