Yes, believing that Christ is a fictional character is a genuine belief, but it is not a legitimate one. Two things:

1. Believing in Christ does not make you a Christian. You have to believe he exists, and that he is the son of God. If you don't then you are not a Christian anymore than I am an atheist because I believe in atheists.

2. The funny thing is that you are trying to sound all smart, but you are making a statement that even secular historians don't believe. There are very few serious historians, even atheist ones, that do not believe that Jesus exists. The evidence is overwhelming and goes way beyond just what is in the Bible. There is as much evidence, if not moreso, that Jesus exists as that which shows that Socrates existed.

A smart atheist will acknowledge that Jesus existed, because the facts are there. He will simply believe that Jesus had no divine power, as divine power, in the eyes of an atheist, is a myth.

It is funny that a Christian such as myself has to help you become a better, more logical atheist. :-P

An easy way to tell if you are a Christian is if you are a follower of Christ. Even the devil believes that God and Jesus are real, but doesn't follow, therefore not a Christian!

No. The "belief" taught in the Bible is not that he existed, but that He is whom He stated: the son of God in the flesh.
Your "belief" is not even that he existed! So you're way far from believing he not only is REAL but the son of God.

And why do you believe he is fictional? The Bible is not the only book that records the history and account of His life and death. Roman's had to keep records of everyone they crucified. Check your history. Believe. He's real. He's awesome. He loves you.

Muslims believe christ and his miracles etc were all real, but they would not consider themselves christian. Jews believe christ existed but he was not the son of god. In your case, I would have to say.. no, you're a non-believer. Which is fine, there are a lot of good things in the Bible, and as a non-believer, you can choose those things which you deem to be good and apply them to your own life.

The point is that you believe He lived on this earth, took your sin upon Himself, died on the cross, taking that sin away, rose again on the third day to live forever, and now lives with the Father in Heaven. When you believe THAT, the Holy Spirit comes to live in your heart and walk with you through life.
This is what constitutes a belief in Christ and being a Christian.

Believing in Christ and putting your faith in Christ are two separate things. It says in James 2:19 Even the demons believe and shudder. The difference however is that Christians put their faith in God and believe him to be their Saviour.

Believing in Christ does not make you a Christian. Even the Devil and demons believe in Him. You have to accept him as your personal Lord and Savior in order to be a Christian.

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, then you shall be saved."

It doesnt matter history itself states Jesus walked upon the earth..Notice when it comes to dates we say 1000 years BC
or 1714 AD.. Thats not referring to Santa Claus ok? Its not referring to Rip Van Winkle or William Tell its telling us that Jesus arrival and departure from this earth was so significant that it is marker and divider of time in history.

In a technical sense yes you beleive. But the fact that you think he is fictional is something that turns down the fact that you"beleive" as in worshipping. I hope you find your true self whether it be with God or another sentient being.

No, you're not a Christian. It's not just believing on him. It's believing that Jesus died on the cross for you & is your savior.
