Here is a link to a website that I use often. It lists common dream meanings, lists popular categories in ABC order and also has a place you can search by typing in keywords. Here it is... http://www.dreammoods.com/
Desert:
To dream that you are walking through a desert, signifies loss and misfortune. You may be suffering from an attack on your reputation. Deserts are also symbolic of barrenness, loneliness and feelings of isolation and hopelessness.
Sand:
To see sand in your dream, signifies a shift in perspective or a change in your attitude. Consider also the familiar phrase, "the sands of time" in which it may be suggesting that you are wasting your time or letting time pass you by. To see wet sand in your dream, indicates that you are lacking a sense of balance in your life.
Sand Dunes:
To see a sand dune in your dream, signifies your desires to be sheltered from the bitterness of reality.
Walking:
To dream that you are walking with ease, represents the way you are moving through life and progress toward your goals. Consider your destination. To dream that you have difficulties walking, indicates that you are reluctant and hesitant in proceeding forward in some situation. You may also be trying to distance yourself from certain life experiences.? The difficulty in walking is a reflection of your current situation and the obstacles that you are experiencing.
Hope that helped! Enjoy the site!

The first part of the dream is a description of the inner you. You are independent and not encumbered by material things. The desert also indicates strength. The presence of a good friend is a call to action. The friend is showing you a direction or a path to be traveled. The fact that they walk out of sight before you wake up means you are unsure in the decision. The fact there is no one else there means this is a decision only you can make and it is either yes or no. Good luck.

Hi Pastor
It means you had a dream where you were standing in an empty, sandy desert. You saw a good friend walking towards you but they turned away and walked off.
But you already knew that.
As to waking up at that point, if we remember our dreams at all it is almost always trhe last thing that we dreamed that we remember. So no surprises there, either.
There are 6,000,000,000 people in the world, and almost all of them go through an average of 3-4 periods of REM sleep per night (that's when we usually do our dreaming).
And we may have more than one storyline during each period of REM sleep.
Indeed, your description is so brief it is quite possible that there was quite a lot more to the dream that you couldn't remember when you woke up.
Also perfectly normal.
That's AT LEAST 20,000,000,000 (20 billion) dreams per night, all around the world.
Wouldn't it be pretty amazing if bein in a desert, or seeing a friend who turns away, or anything else, had exactly the same meaning in every single dream it appeared in, regardless of the dreamer's:
- age
- sex
- country/culture
- personal circumstances
- etc?
In other words, the things in YOUR dreams have meanings that make sense in YOUR dreams. And they don't even necessarily have the same meaning for you EVERY time they appear.
Anyone with a reasonable imagination could invent a detailed interpretation for your dream, (see the variety of DIFFERENT interpretations offered in reply to other questions about the meanings of dreams on this forum) but however interesting - or painfully unimaginative - their interpretation might be, it is VERY unlikely to be true.
Because:
The purpose of dreams, as far as we understand them, is to process the vast amount of information that comes in through your senses each day whilst you're awake.
On this basis the "meaning" of our dreams is simply that we are making sense of information which previously didn't have a "meaning", for us, because it hadn't been processed so as to fit into our mental maps of the world (all your existing beliefs, ideas, values, etc.).
Given this purpose, there will always be something in each dream, though we may not remember it, which ties the dream to recent "real life" events. However most of the things which appear in our dreams may have nothing to do with what has been happening in our life just before the dream occurs. Things can appear in a dream that have been part of the dreamer's memories as far back as they first started forming memories - or anytime in between then and now.
Nor do the things in your dreams have to be obviously related to each other. Like I said, dreaming is a process of finding/making meaning, and the brain can draw from anywhere in its huge store of memories in order to carry out that process.
By the way, there is nothing random about this process, but your subconscious mind can come up with connections that your conscious mind would never dream of (!), which is why dreams often seem pretty weird. Like dreaming that you are alone in a desert and a friend walks towards you then turns away.
So when, if ever, you happen to notice yourself having what seems like a weird dream in future you can literally rest assured that everything is OK. Your brain is actually doing, with great skill, one of the many jobs it was designed to do.

To dream of being alone in the desert signifies a lack of emotional satisfaction. loneliness or perhaps isolation. Dreaming of being in the desert with someone else shows that relationship going sterile, or going nowhere.

Does it feel like it means something? Not all dreams have a meaning, but you can usually tell which ones do. It could just be your brain being bored.
If it does mean something, it sounds like you feel like your life is a bit barren. Are you in a rut? Maybe you need to do something new to shake things up.

Maybe you feel that you and a person in your life are growing apart or just not in touch at all anymore. It might be a situation where nobody is fighting the lack of friendship and you might feel lonely like there is nobody else. Who knows dreams are weird!

I would say that it means that you feel isolated and lack emotional support, or maybe just fear these things.
