In Greek mythology, the Greek soliders took the city of Troy by hiding inside the statue of a giant horse that they left outside the city as a gift to the Trojans. When they took the horse into the city, the Greeks came out and killed them all.
A Trojan Horse is like that. It is some kind of a harmful software (virsus, spyware, etc) that is hidden inside of another program. They offer you something free that you want, like a weather program or a video player, or a file on Limewire. When you download the file, you get the harmful program at the same time. So a Trojan Horse is not so much a type of program as a way to deliver the program to your computer.
Most anti-virus and spyware scanners are able to look through files and detect harmful programs hidden within the downloaded files. But not always....
That is why you have to be careful about what you download from the Internet - especially through progams like Bit Torrent and Limewire where you have no idea who is giving you that file.

A destructive program that masquerades as a benign application. Unlike viruses, Trojan horses do not replicate themselves but they can be just as destructive. One of the most insidious types of Trojan horse is a program that claims to rid your computer of viruses but instead introduces viruses onto your computer.
The term comes from the a Greek story of the Trojan War, in which the Greeks give a giant wooden horse to their foes, the Trojans, ostensibly as a peace offering. But after the Trojans drag the horse inside their city walls, Greek soldiers sneak out of the horse's hollow belly and open the city gates, allowing their compatriots to pour in and capture Troy.
Trojan horses are broken down in classification based on how they breach systems and the damage they cause. The seven main types of Trojan horses are:
Remote Access Trojans
Data Sending Trojans
Destructive Trojans
Proxy Trojans
FTP Trojans
security software disabler Trojans
denial-of-service attack (DoS) Trojans

In Ancient Rome a Trojan Horse is know as a horse statue known to the trojans that the Greeks used to fool the trojans in to thinking that it was a gift but ambushed them and killed the trojans at night with it.
If you want to know about computers a Trojan Horse is a pretty deadly computer virus that makes the computer malfunction, takes information and passwords etc.And then the computer user should get some malware wiper to remove the virus then.Hope that helps alot.

Are you refering to the seige of Troy? After years of war between the Trojans and Greeks. Greek Commandos made a wooden horse and and To the Trojans the horse was a sybol of the gods. They took it into their city and after they were all drunk and asleep the Greeks came out of the horse and opened the Gates to Troy and the Greek army poured in killing almost everyone.

Trojans are programs (often malicious) that install themselves or run surreptitiously on a victim's machine. They do not install or run automatically, but may entice users into installing or executing by masquerading as another program altogether (such as a game or a patch) or they may be packaged with hacked legitimate programs that install the trojan when the host program is executed.

It is a program that installs malicious software onto your computer. This software could make your computer do some crazy stuff. It can also allow others to access your computer from the internet an screw it up. If you have one, i would recommend you to get a good anti virus software. Not the free anti virus software, something like McAfee, Norton or Symantec. The free software usually helps the viruses get in.
