Is it cheaper to shop in supermarket or buy goods seperately from greengrocers, butchers etc?

What are the pros and cons of supermarkets vs local and specialist shops?

You may have a bigger selection at specialty shops, and the prices may be competitive since they can buy their more exotic items in bulk..... BUT, I tend to have rather pedestrian tastes, so therefore, regular supermarkets more than meet my needs. Plus, one stop shopping saves time and gas, which to me is priceless, especially the time saving aspect, since I work full time. If I did have special shopping needs tho, I would certainly consider shopping at a specialty store, but would try to combine the trip with other chores to make the best use of my time.
