I want to know why all of the owners of pit bulls and other know aggressive breeds feel they need to change every one's veiws on the fact that they are breed to attack and kill other dogs and small animals.Hence the ability and desire to attack children. ANd I am not saying ONLY and ALL pits do this. ALL DOGS BITE> Just most are easier to dislodge from the person or animal being attacked.

Sorry I personally think the breed is a waste of flesh. It's a shame what people bred them to be the way they are.But it is a bred in trait not a learned one. Learning aggression just enhances what was always there.

A Chihuahua can be nasty and bite too, but you can REMOVE it easily and it won't kill you even if it attacks a baby it won't KILL IT.

FYI people: I owned 2 Pit bulls in the past.I don't think that they should ALL be killed either. I'm just sick of people not owning up to the fact that they are what they are.And I work with aggressive dogs a lot.No I don't think that it's o.k. for some and not others. I do feel it's less of a danger to get nailed by a small dog instead of a pit.

I agree with you to an extent. I do not think that the breed should be wiped out or anything, but I do think you should be required to have some sort of permit or license to own one just because certain breeds are more "prone" to aggression. I think if you have to go through the trouble of getting a license (which should have mandatory training classes) you are more likely to be a responsible pet owner. I have a lab pit mix, and all though I trust him completely, I will never let him run loose, be alone with children, or anything like that. We have done extensive training with him and give him TONS of exercise to get that energy out.

You scare me in the fact that you have "professionally" worked with dogs for 15 years yet you still have no clue as to what you are speaking of. I have worked with pit bulls and many other breeds for the past 21 years. You are being very steriotypical and its people like that that give the breed a bad name. I have a pit bull(pure bred) that is a registered therapy dog. Guess where he goes once or twice a week. The Childrens hospitol. Funny... He has never "ripped the face off of a toddler". Any breed of dog can become aggressive. Arent labs, retrievers, and setters all breed to hunt? What do you think they do when they catch their prey. They dont cuddle with it. So whos to say that the toddler down the street doesnt resemble a raccoon to the neighborhood hound dog. I believe that the people that are answering your comment have never even owned or played with a pit bull before. They are all media junkies and believe everything that they hear on the tv. Pit bulls also dont have a lockjaw this is false info.In 2006 the breed of dog that had the most recorded dog bites in that year was the cocker spaniel. The pit bull wasnt even in the top 5. Also did you know that one of the most honored war dog in history was a pit bull. They are one of americas oldest breeds and many famous people all through history have adored this wonderful breed.

first off German Shepard's are trained to viciously attack people by police departments, but people proudly have them as pets. pit bulls are trained to attack and kill by cruel people. yes some people do breed pits to be this way, but the key word is PEOPLE (HUMANS). why do we have to discuss the breed ??? why not the the humans that are making these animals this way. they are the problem. there are people killing people are we gonna ban Asians because that kid killed 30 people and wounded dozens. should they get a permit to go to school now. are you one of those people that judge people not by wrong doing, but by race ?? if you work with animals i hope my dog is not on its death bed counting on a person like you to save his life. pit bull owners defend them because lets say my family has to move to a new city where pit bulls are banned, so we get this letter in the mail cuz we do the right thing and register our dog. well the letter states due to city regulations your breed of dog is known as a vicious animal and is a danger to the community. oh ok so now i have to tell my family sorry but he has to go because some ****** raised a killer dog. so our family pet that hasent done anything but love us , cry with us, shared all our joy and happines over the years has to be put down. try telling your child that. and when she is crying then you can tell her its ok you must understand thats the law and there is nothing we can do to change it. so what do you think ?? should we keep discussing these dogs or try to figure out how to stop the killer trainers ?? and just because a dog can let go after they bite someone are you gonna keep it around after it bites your baby?? i was next to a pretty young girl in a recovery room that got her lip ripped off by a chihuahua. i am not attacking you but i am upset that everyone always has something to say about us owners that are raising good dogs. even a mut will attack and badly hurt other animals and if it is small or old enough it could die.

Pitt bulls and bull dogs were originally bred to help farmers and ranchers with their bulls - you know cattle. Their tenacity was encouraged to help keep the dogs from being killed or maimed by the bull since a full-grown bull is much larger than a dog. By holding on once a bite was established the bull was unable to trample or gore the dog and the bull's attention was entirely on the dog so the men trying to get the bull under control had the time to take whatever measures they had to without the threat of the bull trying to gore or trample them. Unfortunately some aggressive humans decided to pit their dogs against each other and try for the most ferocious one. This also was done with roosters - male chickens. 'Pit bulls' were not the only breed of dog that this was done with, but they got the name and reputation because their tenacity made many of them victorious over other breeds. Have you read "White Fang" ? It may be an older book, but it's well written and it tells about dog-fighting.

Sorry!!! Pits are NOT breed to be aggressive!!!! They are NOT born that way!! To each their own opinion!!! Have you ever known one or owned one? If you do not experience any breed first hand then you should not judge. Back in the 70's Dobermans were the ones to get a bad rap as the Pits do now!! This is ALL due to ignorant heartless humans!! DO NOT blame the breed. That is simply ignorant to the fact!!!! My daughter owns three Pits that have been raised with my two granddaughters that are 6 & 4 years old & there has never been an incident!! Now, if someone were to harm those children, there would be an attack, but not to the girls!!!!

I don't think all pit bull owners want to necessarily change others' views per se; I think its more about education and stopping the spread of myths and sterotypes that's at the forefront. I don't care of people think pit bulls (or like breeds) are the most dangerous breed on earth, as long as they are forming that opinion based on truth, not media-perpetuated propoganda.
I think alot of people have the misconception that ANY dog will behave to reflect the way it is raised. While I beleive this to be somewhat true, I think you are correct in saying that genetics and breed history play a HUGE part in how the dog behaves, its disposition, and its aggressive tendencies. Pit bulls are terriers, and they were also bred to fight other dogs. Dog aggression is absolutely in the genes, and any responsible owner knows this, respects it, and takes proactive measures to protect theor own dog and the pets of others. However, the tendency for dog and small animal aggression on the part of pits DOES NOT mitigate a tendency to attack children, or any human for that matter. I'm not sure how people came to this conclusion, but it doesn't work that way. Pit bulls (and other dogs) know the difference between humans and animals. Children are not seen as "small prey". Dog aggression and human aggression stem from very different places within the dog, and serve VERY different functions for the dog. That's not to say that pits don't have the ABILITY to do so (you are correct here, as ANY dog has the ability to attack), but they most certainly do not have the desire to do so. Most pits are fiercely loyal to their people, and have a special affinity for children. That, like the dog aggression, is also a genetic tendency.
And agreed: most dogs are DEFINITELY easier to disloge from the prey than pit bulls. This is also genetic, and not due to anything physical (another common myth). Pits were bred for a trait called "gameness" and it refers to the dog's tendency to persevere even in the face of adverse situations. So they do tend to hang on to things.
I hope this offered you another perspective, coming from a pit bull owner. I don't want to change views, but I do want people to make the most educated decision before they decide to write off pit bulls. I'd rather have someone still hate pit bulls and know that they based that opinion on facts and truths, rather than on myths or nothing at all.

Pit Bulls are normally very aggressive towards other dogs and small animals. Early training and socialization helps to curb this tendency, but there is no "fix" for a dog that is predisposed to aggression towards other animals.
Early socialization and training--and lots of it--are a MUST with this breed. Pit Bulls are very powerful, strong-willed animals who must be taught their proper place in the home, and how to act around both people and other animals.
I personally think pits are great, but they are an aggressive breed and do need proper training. I've attached a link to a great site with lots of information on pit bulls.

Pit Bulls are NOT vicious by nature, the are goaded into becoming that way by ignorant people who wanted nasty guard dogs, and some have turned on them as a result. If they are brought up with love and affection, that all they know, and they will respond in kind, like any other breed does.

My good friend is a pit bull breeder and he has 7 pits. They are all the nicest and friendliest dogs you will ever meet. They have never attacked me, anyone that visit's his house and they have never hurt his 4 year old daughter. I have been attacked by a dog and it wouldn't let my leg go. This dog wasn't a pit bull either!
