does anyone think it's a subconscious effort to kind of get their own back on the Christians for all the terrible tortures that Christians carried out in the middle ages. And all the atrocities that the church carried out in the name of religion?
What does everyone else think.
I have this real loathing for Christians and I wonder if it's to do with all the books I have read on the middle ages etc.

you see biased. The whole R+S forum is a site that bashes others faiths, be it christian, atheistic, muslim, etc.

You shouldn't loathe a general group, you don't know everyone in that group.

I think you need to get your facts straight. It was the Roman Catholic Church which behaved in this way and many of the victims were people whose views did not correspond with theirs -- the very people who are being victimised on this page for being true to their beliefs. I watched a very good programme on the Inquisition last night from which I learned that this persecution continued until the latter part of the nineteenth century! You are quite right to feel revulsion at the atrocities committed by these people - any right minded person would. But please don't confuse what went on in the Roman Catholic Church in less enlightened times with the Christian faith as taught in the Bible, which Christians take as the basis for their belief. The inquisitors were against people reading the Bible and burned all modern translations they could get their hands on. It's an ironic thought that they too would have been attacking Christians on Y/A!

Almost every faith on R&S bashes or baits the others, atheists seem to love Christian-bashing over any other form of religion-bashing. Christians can be very rude about wiccans, mediums etc and just about everyone bashes scientology. The posts by Muslims tend to be more polite, if some times a little long-winded.

To be fair, Islam (Armenian genocide, 9/11), Christianity (Crusades, the Inquisition) and Atheism (Stalin, Mao) all have atrocites in their past.

Let me see if I am understanding you.
You read about the Inquisition, and now you loathe Christians, is that basically it?
You do realize, I trust, that the terrible tortures you read about were carried out by the Roman Catholic Church on CHRISTIANS who refused to worship as they dictated? For the most part, they weren't torturing atheists, or pagans, or any such thing...if there were any such in that time, they were wisely keeping their mouths shut about it, I guess.
There were those witch hunts in Salem. A horrible over-reaction to some hysterical little girls. Of course, the men and women accused were actually CHRISTIANS...did you know that?
Or maybe you read about the Crusades...did you know that the Crusades were actually a response to Muslim conquest? The Christians in those conquered lands appealed to their brothers in Christ for help...if you consider the hatred between Muslims and Christians that exists today, can you imagine what it must have been like in that long ago time for Christians in lands that had been conquered by Muslims? Maybe, if you had been alive then, you may have wanted to help them, yourself, since you seem to abhor violence.

So, let me ask you, my friend, have any Christians you may know tortured you in any way? I don't mean, have they tried to tell you about Jesus...that is hardly torture, compared to what you have read in your books. It may be annoying, but it doesn't compare to having your eyes put out with a hot iron, or anything. The worst thing a Christian might do is to pray for you...
So, how, exactly, are you getting your own back? What, of your own, have Christians actually taken? I don't think any Christians have violated your mother, or murdered your father, or kidnapped your sister, or any such thing...they may have prayed for these people, but, again, not comparable to those atrocities you read about.
Please, if any Christians come and burn your house down, or anything, you will come and let us know, immediately...
Meantime, I will pray for you.
May God bless you!!

What those Christians did then was wrong. However, true Christians live a biblical, Christ centered life. They strive to be selfless in all things and put God first in every area of their lives. We all sin. Even the most righteous Christian backslides from time to time.

What liberals fail to realize is that what Muslims are doing now is what Christians did hundreds of years ago. Both are equally wrong. Christianity is no longer like that though.

Sure, there are still a few stragglers who preach hellfire and brimstone (which is valid because it exists, but their tactics are hostile), but Christianity as a whole is not a bad thing. In fact, Jesus Christ died for everyone's sins. The offer is open to ANYONE.

Yes, there is a lot of baiting/bashing going on here towards Christians. A lot of stuff has been done in the name of religion. If you look at Jesus and not religion you will see a message of love to everyone. After all, Jesus came for the weak and poor...those who needed Him. The church is made up of humans....granted, we should be following God's will but we still have our sinful nature that wants us to do bad things. If Satan is allowed to use us to hinder the spread of the Gospel then he is happy.

I appreciate that you have asked this question. Unfortunately, you know you will soon be accosted by the frothing masses of cross-carrying bible-beating extremists.

The Jews may speak of their Holocaust. For my part it pales in comparison the holocaust committed over Europe by and before the Middle Ages, one that destroyed whole peoples and cultures. The terroristic brain-wash techniques of the Church were so severe and so thorough that we are STILL reeling from its effects! To this very day the many dare not even question it.

your question is as uninformed as the answers!
any christian that tells you that their religion is not rammed down your throat is either lying or just plain stupid!
for "one" example. in the uk we have the sunday trading law. this is based on christian belief but is applied to all regardless of whether or not they are christian. so the atheist (and all others) must abide by christian rules or be punished.
those who are members of a club expect to have to obey that clubs rules. why should those who are not members be forced to obey them?
other countries have different religions. no doubt their laws are based on the dominant religion.
i'm sure you will see posts that try to discredit this opinion by saying that since all laws have a religious basis, i'm suggesting that they are all wrong, and so re-direct the focus. others will say that if this was not the law, employers could and would force people to work on sundays. in spite of their religion.
lets face it were it possible some would force people to work 24/7/52.
it's the word sunday that defines it as christian based. oneday a week would serve the same purpose would it not?
by the way the gregorian calender was named after the pope that commissioned it. so i guess the catholics are still one up on the protestants:)

Yep, that is why I worship Jesus and not Christians. It is actually a real shame because Christians are suppose to represent Jesus to this world. Many struggle with this, and therefore set a negative example to the rest of the world. No wonder people hate us. The only way we can change this is to stop preaching and lift our sorry buts and start doing work for Christ!!! Show some love. Do not judge.

LOLOL Thanks for the laugh.
I think people get upset with Christians because it is the most evangelical faith around and people are tired of it. But if you think people only bash the Christians, you haven't looked at the muslim posts. Or the twisted athiest ones. If YOU are Christian you are going to notice the christian baiting more, because you're paying more attention. That's just a mental thing. Your eyes are naturally more drawn to the word.

During the middle ages, the main and foremost ones who you're trying to blame was the Catholic Church (now, I'm not negative towards it), rather then "Christians." Protestants did so but on a much lower scale.
