sit ups wont make you lose weight - you will gain more muscle, they dont burn fat
to lose weight you have to do cardio (also jumping jacks) 4-6 times a week for 30-50min combined with light weight training
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

The first suggestion is good, ESPECIALLY the warm up portion and stretch. EVERY exercise routine needs a good warm up and cool down. For some added cardiovascular exercise, try jacks for 1 minute 30 seconds and then at the end a 30 second burst of jacks as fast as you can go. This will elevate the heart rate and REALLY work you out. Doing these in intervals as the first person said, is a good way to break it down. Jacks are hard to do for an extended period of time. Yes, it will. But make sure to wear a nice shoe, it can harm your knee joint, just like running. Another good cardio work out would be swimming. or bike exercise. Karate is also fun, besides it will build your confidence, respect, appreciation, and make new friends, etc, etc.....

always have vegetables on hand saute a big bag of frozen mixed vegetables in olive oil and garlic add some red pepper or turmeric for additional flavor and separate into portion sized containers for the fridge
