We, in Spanish, have different levels of love. In English, you just say I LOVE YOU for almost everything. In Spanish, we have levels.

In a friendship:
1st Level: Te quiero
2nd Level: Te amo
BF/GF relationship:
1st Level: Me importas - I care about you - When you care about the person you are hanging out with.
2nd Level: Te quiero - I want you (but not in a sexual way, in terms of you care about the person. You like the way the person is) When you are starting to have feelings invloved.
3rd Level: Te quiero mucho - I want you so much (the same way) When you care about the person you are going out with, and feelings, like love, is getting involved
4th level: Te amo - I love you - You loev the person now. It has been a while. Many things have happened between you and the person, and what you can only say is 'Te amo - I love you'.
