How about the aquarium or the zoo or something like that where you can walk and talk you know not trying to pay attention to a movie or something like that.... a day date is best for first timers..

How about something slow - like soup and sandwich at the local coffee shop and then tour the zoo? Get a picture of her feeding the lorikeets or petting the Llama or something nice but not too pricey - but something sweet to remember the day.
No zoo? A nice stroll through the park or along the water (beach, river, lake). Bring along some crackers or bread crusts to feed the birdies and fish. Bring along a book of good poetry to share. Let her keep the book - again something sweet to remember the day.
That way you can get to know each other without either of you being on "display."
