My friend reads alot about old religions and spiritality and is always going on about 2012, but never says what is going to happen does anyone know?

Other posters here have mentioned that the Mayan Calendar is simply going to end and then recommence. That is true. However, the Mayans believed that at the end of the cycle, the world dies and then is reborn. What that means is up to interpretation. Does that mean that its the end of the world as we know it? Does it mean a new ice age? Maybe its just an uneventful rotation, just as the sun dies each night and is reborn in the morning (as the Mayan's believed). It's hard to know.
Some researchers say that 2012 is supposed to be when the Mayan (later Toltec and Aztec) god Quetzalcoatl (the winged-serpent) will return to destroy the wicked and renew the earth to its pure and paradisical state. It is interesting to note that there are many parallels between this belief and the Christian belief of Christ's Second Coming.
Legends describe him as a white, bearded man who came to visit the people of Mesoamerica around the time of Christ. He did many powerful miracles among the people, but eventually returned to Heaven, promising that he would return some day. The story goes that when Emperor Moctezuma saw Cortes and the Spanish arriving, he believed that it was their god, Quetzalcoatl returning, as promised.
So, will 2012 be the Second Coming? I guess we'll see!

It is a reference to the Mayan calendar; but contrary to how most people interpret the words "the world will end", this date (specifically 12-21-2012) does not signify the physical ending of the world...
It signifies an end to this world AS WE KNOW IT...this is a critical distinction. It is my sincere hope and prayer that by this important date, we humans have spiritually evolved to the point that we begin to understand our Unity. If we achieve this higher level of understanding, to the point that we no longer are pitted against each other but are UNITED as MEMBERS OF PLANET EARTH, we will see a beautiful change in our reality.
Right now it doesn't feel like we're really on track...just look at the discussions that go on in here!! We SHOULD be trying to learn about each other's beliefs, thoughts, hopes, dreams. Instead, we're too busy trying to prove that "we're right, and you're wrong", etc., and we learn very little if anything. However, this could just be part of the process. We still have 5 years to figure it out...
But that's not very much time!! If I were you all, I'd just try to work on strengthening my Spirit/Soul, in whatever way you choose to go about that. Focus on what you have in common with your fellow Earthlings, how we are connected. Think positive, be hopeful. I do have faith in my fellow Beings...we WILL reach that next level, and we'll do it together!! :)
Point is: be not afraid. This is nothing bad, there is no "doom" associated with it...it's just progression and signifies reaching a new level in our Spiritual Evolution.

God forbids humans to know such dates. Thus all I can say about 2012 is that January 1 shall be a Sunday. (according to my mobile)
If I am alive I'll probably go to church, and next have lunch. In the afternoon, I am going for a walk with my dog. In the evening I'll probably read my Bible a little.
On Dec 31, 2012 a lot of people in various countries are going to burn fireworks celebrating new years. Many of these shall have a tremendous headache on Jan 1, 2013.

I think that is supposed to be when the Mayan Prophecy is fulfilled. Somewhere around Christmas time. In their religion, that date is listed as a critical date. I'm not that familiar with it, but supposedly it's supposed to bring in a new dawn of enlightenment. Horror stories include that animals and technology will rise up against humankind. If that's true, then the Terminator movies have some credibility.

2012 is the end of the Myan calander. Nobody knows for sure what this means, other then the Myan calander ends. Many people speculate it is the end of the world. Others speculate that the ice caps will melt causing many low areas like florida to disapear under the ocean. Other people speculate that god is comming to take his followers off this hell hole and let them live in heaven.

Nothing. I think those Mayan Indians just got tired of writing out the calendar and it just happened to end in 2012.

It is the last year of the Mayan calendar after which the world is supposed to end, but that doesn't mean that anything special will happen. What did the Mayans know? They didn't even foresee the end of their own civilization.

We'll have a new president
The sun will continue to shine
Items will still fall on earth at 9.8 m/s squared.
But....all the idiots who claim to predict calamities and disasters are full of crap
