Interesting question,

Another question might be "why doesn't God do whatever it takes to prove to all the doubters that He does exist? ".

As you can see by some of the other answers no amount of evidence or miracles from God will convince those who refuse to believe.

Belief in God will always be a matter of Faith and Personal Experience.

For me, the slightest bit of hard evidence would do it. No matter how illogical it might be, something that could only have been done by God - not a delusion on my part, not a magic trick, not a barely-seen illusion - and I'd happily drop my conviction that the whole thing is a human invention.

Hell - I'd probably join the church or something. What could be more interesting? But there's not a snail's chance that this will happen, 'cos he ain't there.

Edit: I'm surprised to see that some atheists are saying they wouldn't buy it even with proof. Perhaps they mean they wouldn't buy a formal religion or a personal God. I dunno.

I consider the idea that any of the *religions* are accurate even less likely than God hisself - and he's impossible!

But if I was given formal proof I'd be delighted. After all, one of the big reason religion is so successful is that it promises MAJOR pie in the sky. If I'm really required to give up sex, drugs and baby-eating I'm happy to in return for that pie.

Nothing has to happen... It's not like if an atheist gets some hot guy / chick to go out with him / her suddenly the world is happy and bright and of course there's a God. It comes down to proof. They do not believe in God because there is not tangible evidence for a God. You can say "look at the pretty flowers" etc, but that is not proof. You can point to your holy book of choice, but that is not proof either.

The only reason I believe in God is because of my intuition, and I recognize that that could turn out to be some weird biochemical thing in my brain, but I think there is more to it than born - live - die - rot. Nothing is going to "happen" to change my believe that God is an unknown thing that may or may not exist, barring God showing up in all his Glory and saying "Yo! Here I am."

There were many miracles performed in the Bible, yet many still doubted. There are miracles all the time in this life, but yet many doubt.

I know of a real miracle that just happened last week. If I did not know Christ, then maybe I would think it was 'luck', but it was not. It was the hand of God that healed a newborn's heart.

My friend's baby was scheduled for open heart surgery as soon as he was born. The mds had done two extensive ultrasounds and had determined he had a severe heart valve issue that needed surgery within hours of his birth. We knew this for the last two months of her pregnancy. We all prayed for the Lord's will to be done and for the Lord to be glorified.

Jude was born. The drs looked at his heart. They thought he was better than they expected, but still needed surgery. They waited 24 hrs. When they checked him again, Jude's heart was completely healed!

The drs were stumped. The nurses in the PICU didn't know what to do. They had never discharged a baby from the PICU b/c they usually step down to NICU, etc...

With 48 hrs of Jude's birth, he was home with his mother. No surgery, no heart problems, ALL GOD.

What else do you need?

You will still doubt. You will still ask for miracles, signs, etc... God knows that, and He knows your heart.

Faith, that is what you need.

Stuff that did not happen over 2,000 years ago, and a 100 years after it happened. It would have to come down and show me something so awesome that I cannot even think of what it could be. No one is better than me, so why should I believe what certain people think. Also, people making things that happen fit into G-d doing it, then I 'd believe in G-d. No organized religion, either, it is only here to make other people feel bad and go to church/temple and give money.

People all talk about needing evidence God is real, is the world so blind they don't see evidence around them everday. How about 15 years ago them finding a piece of Noah's arc. The finding of pieces of the cross He was crucified on. I dont know all of the findings but this is 2 I know of. Then the fact that every prophecy in the Bible is coming true in front of our eyes. I think in the book of Isaac is where it talks about the twin towers being destroyed. Proof? You need proof look in the Holy word of God.

God would have to come and tap me on the shoulder and say "Hey. I'm God". Then I'd ask him to prove it by performing some sort of miracle. Then and only then if I was satisfied that the miracle wasn't an illusion or a trick, would I possibly believe in the existence of God.

I would need a little evidence for His existence. Not hard proof, just a tiny shred of evidence would really be enough. I've yet to see any of that.

If I'd have that I'd believe in Him. It would take a lot more for me to worship that God you're talking about. The biblical God is an amoral God, and He would have to change a lot for me to worship Him.

Do you mean something that will revert me back to a form of Christianity?

The theory of evolution or the big-bang theory being completely disproven and the falsehood of gravity. Maybe super-powers, or seeing an 'angel'. Maybe someone stopping time in front of me. Something odd and super natural that science cannot not explain at all. Like an actual 'Saint' or seeing God myself.
