According to the Chatham House research institute in London, Iraq is a country a country" torn apart by not just one civil war but several insurgencies involving different religious, ethnic and political groups." We are not accomplishing much." US forces appear to have "simply pushed insurgent activity to neighboring cities" and cannot create conditions that will resolve political differences among various groups". From today's Yahoo News.

Gaby: and what party had control over the Legeslative, Executive and Judicial brances over the past 6 years? This IS Bush's war. He and his noeocon junta, ( especially Wolfowitz) , misled the American people into invading and occupying Iraq.

Grips: No. I don't. Not to this extent and not seeing Iraq as failed state. I think you may be correct in that Iraq will be better of as 3 states.

The question should be, will the Bush Junta accept responsibility for their politics, policies and incompetence. This is a cabal of individuals who, 'wish it to be so, therefore it must be thus'. Their 'vision' of reality is much like a cult. Those in the cult are not capable of seeing what is apparent to those outside the cult. I suspect the 'true believers' of the Bush administration and their supporters will blame the non-existant 'liberal' strawman, some will blame 'the Jews' and others will blame Kennedy, Reid, Clinton (both Bill and Hillary), Jesse Jackson, Moore and I suspect the Pope as he also condemmed this war. But blame themselves for failure and commit honorable hari-kari to atone.....fergetaboutit!

i agree with parts of the story. fragmented sounds like a return to the past, before manmade borders. they are still for the most part a tribal people. Al Sadr could do much to unify the shiites, but a theocracy wouldn't be good. The neighbors should be included in creating a secure, independent Iraq, but i doubt it will happen. blame can be a bad thing, most in America have no idea who did what. sad our history is so easily distorted.
edit. US involvement in somalia and the balkan conflict started under GHW Bush. there was no formal declaration of war on iraq, only a vote to leave it up to bush

Don't you think that situation existed before the war? I mean, Sunni and Shite group didn't form in 2002. A lot of these issues in Iraq have been going on for a thousand years.
Don't seem to ever hear anything about the Kurds anymore. Do you think that area of Iraq is under control and people are happier than they were under Sadaam?

If the Democrats succeed in making us withdrawal, I blame the Democrats 100%.
We have to stay and finish this mission. That will prevent this from turning into another Somalia, which by the way, is a GREAT comparison since it was the DEMOCRATS who created that situation in the first place.

Bush has about 17 months to find a way to blame it on the DCEMS.

Only congress can declare war. Nice try, LIB. The house and senate sent us to war, not Bush. Bush only recommended, but they had and have the power to stop it if they want to. As far as I am concerned, they all share the blame.

Bush's supporters will, and in fact, already are, blaming the democrats and anyone else they can think of. Anyone but themselves and the administration that got us into this mess.

It's simple.
If the dems will shut up about a time line of withdrawing our troops. It won't turn into another Somalia.
Funny how you mention Somalia. Clintoon created that fiasco didn't he?
