Dog is walked regularly, loved and well cared for, has lots of toys and bones. Gets tons of attention and treats when he's good.

Problem is: When dog spends time outside by himself (15 minutes to a half hour) on his leash (even though he had bones and toys around him) he still gets tangled up really bad. Several times I and my husband have had to help him untangle himself. The other day the dog got the leash wrapped around his neck. This worries me.

My questions are: Is this a stage the dog is going through? Do we need to consider buying a run/large kennel for dog? What is the most humane thing to do?

We love our dog and don't want to see him injured by the leash. My husband knows a lot of people that have dogs but their dog is fine on the leash and they don't consider kennels as an option. I'm trying to figure out what is the BEST for the dog.

Thank you.

The leash he's on is 20 feet.

We have the kind right now that has a stake and leash, that's what he's getting tangled up in.

That's what we are using the stake and the coated chain, that's what he's getting tangled up in (even though it's supposed to be a no-tangle chain).

Labs are very energetic!! We have two of them. Both now for 12yrs!

Your best bet is to either fence in your yard, or underground fencing. Keeping them confined in a kennel is not good.

Labs love to play fetch with about anything that they can get into their mouths.

Three to five times a week we take our Labs to the school track and let them run for 30mins.

Our yard is fenced in and we have a kiddy pool just for them to cool off in. Most Labs love water.

It doesn't matter how many toys they have.
They love to RUN!!

Keeping them tied up is not a good thing for these breeds. If you cannot afford the above options, look into a runner that ties from one tree to the other with a pulley that they can run back and forth. Most of the times they will not get tangled.

Good luck, let me know if I can help further.

I have a yellow lab puppy 3 1/2 months old. We went to Wal-Mart and bought a stake that will go all the way into the ground. That way the chain can't get tangled around the stake and it hasn't gotten tangled around her neck. The stake cost $1.50?. We don't use the leash there is a coated plastic type chain you can buy that is very thin but strong. It is much better than a chain or a leash!! Ours is green . Can buy this at PET SMART the chain.

We went to PetSnart to buy the coated chain that you can tie to a tree and it doesn't get tangled up either to the tree or the dog . We bought it for when we go camping in case we can't use the stake. Ground might be to hard??!!
It cost around $15.00 but well worth it!!

Make sure there is no way the dog can jump off of something and hang itself. I have heard dogs that have done that.

I have put my puppy in her kennel and taken her outside for fresh air. It is the next to biggest size they make. I wanted to make sure she had enough room to move around in!! I really think this might be your best bet. I would worry about other dogs coming up to yours and he couldn't get away from them. Remember he is still a puppy. I don't think he will grow out of it?? He might though. I have had dogs where they are just so calm and will just lay down and watch the birds and things.

Our puppy lives in the house all the time but goes on lots of walks. She loves being outside. We don't have a fenced in yard so I worry if another dog would come up to her when she was on a leash.

Have you given any thought to fencing in your yard?? We did where we used to live. Our dogs just loved running all over the place.

I love Labs!! They are so smart. It only took me 3 1/2 weeks to potty train her!! She goes out on a leash.

Good Luck

I agree with Nikki. Are you putting him on a leash or on a long chain?? There are lots of products you can buy to tie your dog outside so he'll be able to run around without choking himself. If he's having issues, keep an eye on him to make sure he's not getting tangled up. Hopefully, he will learn how to play outside without hurting himself.

I like the long dog ties that screw into the ground. I'd give that a try for a while and see how it goes before investing in a kennel or run. If you decide you have to try something else, try to fence in your back yard. It will be a nicer area for the dog than just a kennel and it tends to look nicer too.

On a leash or a long lead? If the dog is one a leash, he may need a longer lead (The ones that screw in the ground are pretty long)

Labs are high energy dogs, at this point, I wouldnt leave him outside by himself if you cant keep an eye on him, if he is getting that tangled up.

How large is your yard? Perhaps a larger kennel would be the way to go, just to keep him safe for that little bit he is outside.

**ETA**

When we visit my mom who doesnt have a fenced in yard (and fencing is very expensive to put in, so unless you can afford it, isnt always an option) my rottie has a run my dad made,(she gets tangled in the stake in the ground too, she's a putz, and didnt grow out if it, she's 3) its a wire cable between the garage and the house, with a long lead attached to it...with no obstacles to get attached to or hung up on, and that has worked over there... (I have a fenced in yard at home)

I would get a fenced in yard, that way he would have plenty room to run and play. But if this is not an option Wal-Mart has this stake that you can put out in the yard and as your dog moves it will move with your dog. I don't see how your dog could possibly get tangled up in it. My parents dog has 2 (one for the front and one for the back yard) and she is a Schnauzer and she doesn't get tangled up in it and they are active little dogs. I think that she will grow out of it though, when they are younger they have much more energy and they are much more curious about everything, it is probably just a stage that she is going through. But my dad did have a kennel for his lab, she didn't seem to mind it at all. Labs are good dogs though. Labs really are active little babies though! :) Good luck, I'm sure all will be fine.

Nothing to worry if the collar is loose Just one thng a lab loves people and they are wonderfull to have do not worry My dogs get tangle up every day Raise the leash up in the air and no nylon leash use a chain that a way it can not tight only wound arond every thing, and his collar should be leather not chain,

I would fence off a large area for him if you can. I own a 2yr old lab mix who tends to do the same thing when she is out on her lead.
