I thought about a plant for his really sunny front porch, but don't want to pressure him with keeping it alive. is there a good hearty plant out there? or maybe scrap that and get him a nice nitelight for the bathroom? (that's my standby housewarming trinket). Any other ideas would be appreciated -- budget is no more than $25. Thanks!

Cactus is good. Or a bottle of something (ex Vodka).
When you move into a new place you usually have no food or things need to be done to make the place comfy so a giftcard to the grocery store or to Home Depot is always good to help get things going.

Get him a bottle of wine or a sixpack, and a gift certificate to Bed, Bath and Beyond; Linens and Things, or Home Depot.
Offer to shop with him if he needs help.

gosh, i would LOVE to recommend a plant like a nice succulant but you haven't told us what sort of climate this man lives in so i would hate to suggest someting that would die.
The NIGHTLIGHT sounds like a great idea for those midnight trips to the toilet, lol. It will be easier for him to find the lightswitch but then he also has the option of not using it at all!

A coffee pot and some good coffee, maybe a countertop container for the grounds/beans. A step beyond would be a travel coffee mug so he thinks about you on his way to work. . .
