to believe in god and the bible, and not Santa, or any other fictional character? The only evidence they could have seen using their own eyesight is the bible and that too is only words on paper, how do they choose which shapes and formations made by ink on paper to devote their life to?

some people, if not most who believe, will have been told from birth that its true by everyone they learn from and trust, parents, school(because a lot get sent to religious schools) priests, their peers, so its what they have believed all their life, they may not want to admit to themselves its bogus because that would contradict everything they held true, so they choose to live in ignorance, and then pass that ignorance on to their own children, and so the cycle begins again.

We cannot underestimate the power of words. Words are powerful tools which can inform, inspire, empower, or repel, just for starters. From the words of the sacred texts of all the world's great religions, humanity has been inspired and guided to achieve great and beneficial results. However, as the original context in which those words were first uttered and recorded changes, word meanings become easy to manipulate. Without actually changing even one of the recorded words, those with power and personal agendas can and do pervert their meaning, bending them to their own ends. The perverted meaning eventually replaces the original intended meanings, perhaps even becomes institutionalized. People react. Some turn away repulsed and disappointed, some follow unquestioningly, some hang on as best they can, trying their best not to mistake the ocean for the pollution that has been poured into it.

There are a lot of words on paper that people choose to believe, without having seen any of it with their own eyes. All that's left is archaeological evidence, and in some cases (as with the most ancient of history) there is none, yet people still believe.
Consider that for a little while.

perhaps it is about what you feel and believe not evidence.
there are contradictions in the Bible as there are everywhere in life but if you feel something right and pure when in church, singing, reading the Bible or praying, then this is more relevant than proving religion is a choice.
Santa and other fictional characters don't really compare to the creator of everything.
If there is no believe in a creator - then what is the point?

Politics and society.
Martin Luther posted his Treatise at the Diet in Worms, Germany (remember "Diet" in this sense means more along the lines of Parliament) and began the Protestant Reformation which distanced Christianity from the Catholic Church (and its attendant saints, superstitions, etc.) and such excesses as paying money to be forgiven of a sin, etc.
The emergence of the Anglican Church had a similar effect.
Why did I say politics and society? "Political," because the power of the Catholic Church was awesome and dangerous at the time of Martin Luther's "Diet of Worms" (the crusades and the Spanish Inquisition comes to mind) and
"social" in that the Anglican Church was created essentially as a convenience to the King to get around the Catholic Church's prohibition against divorce.

I find that the Christian god and Santa have a lot more in common than just gifts. Neither exist.
They are both creations of men.
They both are designed under unreal concepts like "all good" and "all knowing".
And both can be explained only in the context of belief.
