Yes! You would be surprised at how trim and tone just WALKING can make you!
Aim for at least 30-45 minutes. Because that is how long it takes for the fat to start burning off (at 30 minutes).
Make sure you are eating right.

Here is a good site:

Walking for weight control
Control of body weight occurs when the calories taken in as food are balanced with the calories expended through walking and other physical activities. The key issue for weight control is to maximise the total volume of calories used, (at any intensity) and to combine this with healthy eating.
Walking one mile (1.6km) can burn up at least 100kcal (420kJ) of energy and walking two miles (3.2km) a day, three times a week, can help reduce weight by one pound (0.5kg) every three weeks.
Walking also alters fat metabolism so that fat is burned up instead of sugars, helping to reduce weight.

I walk daily on the treadmill . I found walking outdoors was not effective. you need to know how fast you are walking, how many laps you are completing and the time involved. A treadmilll tell you everything. Place it in front of the TV to help pass the time. Try to watch exercise shows as you walk on the treadmill.. when others exercise it encourages you to exercise too. I was 135 lbs a year ago and with half an hour of walking at a fast pace (highest speed 6.3 kms per hour for about 10 mins), I have lost 5 lbs, but everyone says I look like I have lost lots more .I am very well toned now which gives the appearance that i have lost about 10 lbs. I always had heavy thighs and now they are really slim. I love taking my trousers to be altered as they keep getting looser and looser on me as the months pass. With walking most of the weight loss is on the legs. For my husband, he was unable to lose the weight on his tummy. If you swing your arms, you can tone down your arms drastically too. Good luck! BTW I don't diet at all.

Any physical exercise is good for overall health. Walking is a great exercise for maintaining or reducing body weight. As you walk you can always do "sprints" for a few minutes to increase your heart rate, or speed walk. As you increase your walking habits and time walking, you will notice a difference. The key is to keep walking, don't stop, as you increase speed and time, and ultimately burn more calories, you will notice a difference. Remember, a healthy diet is important also, if you a little too much one day, try to walk a little farther than you usually do.

Walking in general helps your health. Pick up any fitness magazine and it'll tell you so. Also if your legs have been active before you eat then it'll boost your metabolism so go for a walk before meals too. If you walk a mile and another person runs a mile, you're still losing the same amount of calories it just may be that they're doing it faster. Hope it helped.

Yes.
Lots of other exercizes could help, but in my opinion, walking helps reduce stress, even beyond the exercise. Stress hormones promote fat build-up, so if you can reduce stress *and* exercise, this is a double-whammy against weight.
My Mother walks (nearly) every day and has never been fat, and is now over 70.
I also saw a woman (comedienne) on TV (National Public Media) who lost *lots* of weight with *lots* of walking. I understood she spent over an hour per day on a treadmill, and stuck with it for years.

Yes walking will help but be sure you are walking long enough to get your heart rate up. Plus, your diet is important too. Cut back on sweets and fat, add a little more protein and lots of water. If you can get up to 3-5 miles in one hour you will see the pounds go away.

for beginning its good.
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

yes,
if you cut your calorie intake in half and cut out all sugar, then it will, walk brisskfully for an hour to an hour and a half, and it will. but remember that it takes time and nothing is instant. commentment, and self controll are the keys, so to try to help you on your question. yes it does just have to make some sacerfices and put in a little hard work, and everything will be groovy!
