This is in the case that the design and ink is done by the same person. In what case would you allow your tattooist to put their makers mark into the design? Do you think it is a similiar situation when an artist paints a painting and signs it?

I would appreciate answers that explain why. Also if you are not into tattoo art and have little say in the matter, don't say it. However if you feel you have something relevant to say, please do! :)

Sunshine Mel: The worth of a signature is for the tattooist. If they take pride in their work it works to provide more acclaim and it can be also regarded as a sign of quality. Similiar to jewelry that is hallmarked.

I would allow it, but I would prefer the signature to be symbolic in nature. It is after all, the artists work, even though you commissioned them to do it. In Japan, the traditional Tebori artists always sign their work. I believe the original purpose for this was partially to prevent non-masters from engaging in large scale work that was above their skill level. I think doing the same here would promote the art form to an overall higher level of quality, just as it has there.

Okay I have a feeling I will be one of the few that would say sure why not let him sign it. I mean pretty much every tattoo I want has words in it or around it so it would go with the flow of the tattoo. Plus I think peoples signatures are very interesting. It would be yet another tattoo conversation starter. Of course their would be limitations on this, it would have to be an amazing tattoo and their name would have to be rather short : )

Yeah that's real smart. Because of your selfish behavior you may ultimately cost someone their job by lying. And you really think you are ready for a tattoo? You cant even think rationally enough to know what the answer to your own question should be. What if the tat got infected..your parents freaked and ended up suing the guy and the shop? you're an idiot and the only tattoo you should be allowed to get is a lick and stick from the gumball machines.

I would! I'm currently having a tattoo completed by one of the most respected artists in the UK, and if he was into signing his work, or asked me if he could I would most certainly say yes! Its an honour for him to use me as his canvas and I'd like everyone to know he did this work on me.
however I wouldn't bother if it was a small tattoo from the parlour on the corner! not that I'd go down that route again, only custom pieces from highly regarded artists for me from now on in!

When I first read your question I was going to say no way.
But I might consider what pinki said. After getting my tattoos
I did let the artist take a picture but I never thought about her
signing them and she didn't ask.

I have been thinking about doing this because I think both my tattoos are pieces of art and the more I think about it the more I like the idea. Just a small signature (like an artist signs a painting.) I have two tattoo both by very good tattooists. It makes sense that they should be signed.

I would be okay with it if it was small, but an artist should never force you to put their signature on a tattoo. If they try to, get out of there fast! Your tattoo is YOURS, not theirs, regardless of whether or not they designed it. If you don't want a signature, you have the right to say no.

I have had a couple of artists sign their work on me, they did it really small and it worked out good. I was able to sign a couple of the tattoo's I did also, people couldn't really see my signature until they really looked for it.

It really would depend on the makers mark.. If it is going to be permanently tattoo'd onto me i'd have to have a say in it. I designed my own tattoos so I dont think i would allow a makers mark..
Who knows though, I could change my mind if i saw what they wanted to do and really liked it.

I have thought about this too. But I decided against it. I figured if the artist doesnt ask then dont worry and if they do, my answer would be they can take a picture of it and use it in their prefessional portfolio. Honestly I remember all of the artists who have inked me, so they really dont need to sign me. Peaches, Fat Bill and Eric. lol These are my artists!
