Paxil is working the best for me. I did have delayed ejaculation but this stopped after about two months. I still have a little depression and anxiety but I feel like I can control.

Desipramine or Norpamin: I took this in the early 1980s for depression. It worked very well on pure depression, I felt so good I thought it was a miracle, but I had side effects of extreme dry mouth and irregular heartbeats. I took it again in the 1990s, and the side effects were worse, the same ones I had before plus constipation, and it didn't help my anxiety.

Buspar: I took this for a few months in the 1990s in combination with Paxil when the Paxil didn't quite do it for my anxiety symptoms. I think it helped. It might have given me a runny nose.

Seroquel. It worked pretty well, but it was too strong, made me sleepy. Sometimes I felt drunk.

St. John's Wort worked, but it gave me stomach aches, so I got back on Paxil.

I have tried numerous anti-depressants over the last few years such as Cymbalta, Lexapro and Wellbutrin, but none of them really seemed to work out. I ended up being a zombie and did not want to do anything. They amde me tired and sluggish. As well as yo-yo with my weight. I told my doctor this and he placed me on Dexedrine 4 months ago for major depression. It has given me my drive and energy back and has got me back to my normal weight. A lot of doctors don't like to prescribe it because it is a Class 2 med., but if it works and you feel better than what the heck. I am willing to try something unless the side effects out way the benefits.

I'm taking Lofepramine (also called Gamanil / Lomont) which is a tricyclic antidepressant. I take 70mg twice a day. I also take diazepam (4mg) when nessercary.

It isn't working wonders, but I am pleased with the results as in the past I have had bad reactions to antidepressants.

I was first prescribed Seroxat (Paroxetine / Paxil) at 13, and was prescribed it on a few ocassions in my teens. It is a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI). I suffer from mild dissociative amnesia so I do not recall my entire experience on this drug, but I do know that whilst taking this medication I began self-mutilating. It also triggered a few manic periods resulting in hypersexuality, drinking, drug taking, stealing and other risky behavouir that I wouldn't normally consider.

I was prescribed Citalopram (Cipramil / Celexa) as an adult, and it had a similar effect to the Seroxat. It is a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI). It triggered severe suicidal ideation and some moderate self-injury. It trigger my 'favourite' manic period where all I could do was exercise. 4 hours down the gym a day was all I could do to stop myself going crazy. Lost 5 stone and was the fittest I've ever been! It is possible that this mania was caused by drinking heavily whilst taking the medication.

The Lofepramine does not do much. I've been on it for 7 months and my depression has followed its normal cycle. Some days have been easier than they would whilst taking this medication, and I have managed to give up drinking. My anxiety is still the same. I do suffer with many side effects - dry mouth, acid reflux, heartburn and queasiness. I'm happy that I am 'stable' on this anti-depressant and will be continuing taking it.

Anti-depressants do not work wonders for everyone, the reaction we all experience to them varies wildly.

Chances are there is a better medication out there for me, and hopefully I'll find it once I have been diagnosed with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) after one more winter.

Elavil not helping for depression have difficulty waking up. Lithium makes me like a zombie. wellbutrin was working ok but i couldn't afford it. Xanax helping with anxiety but not paying the bills. I should have stayed on the wellbutrin because now I'm so depressed, I haven't worked in four months and was working for a good company and had 16 years seniority. I guess that"s what sucks about mental illness.

I am glad to see you are getting many diffrent answers. As each person is diffrent. each medication works diffrent on each person. finding the right one is trial and error. I see one person loves paxil. It made me crazy. my heart raced and I couldn't sleep. I tolerated zoloft better. All and I repeat All anti-depressants are not recomended for teens as they due cause suicidal tendancy. You really have to talk to your doctor. And do not feel bad about needing help. go to www.depresionhurts.com depression can be short term
As for the anxiety. Klonip has workded for years for me No addiction. On low dose. Have also used xanax with no addiction. Have it on had for emergency's. Haven't used it in a month. 30 tabs could last me a year. use to be on it 3 times per day. I have sever anxiety and would never have made it without it. Now I can live a normal life. Only you and your doctor can tell you how bad your anxiety is and what you should do about it. If anything other than trying to count backwards from 60-0

When I make an In Our Own Voice presentation for NAMI (National Allisance for the Mentally Ill: http://www.nami.org ) to tell about my recovery, we are not allowed to discuss which medications worked for us, because it can give people false hope. Everyone's reaction to a particular medication is different. There are many medications that have worked for me over the years. When I change it is usually because I want a better side effect profile. I do applaud you searching for information on antidepressants and other anti-anxiety medications. I would encourage you to make a list of everything you learned and bring it to your next doctor's appointment. Good Luck.

Dangerous question.

There is no "universal" anti-depressant out there. Therefore, asking people this question, to then turn around and go pressure your physician to prescribe you the same thing can be very dangerous for your health.

Your pharmacist or physician should always be your sources of references for medications. They know your condition best and will advise on the BEST treatment for you.

I was on Effexor XR for three years. I liked it; but stopped due to the sexual side effects. That wasn't fun, let me tell you. Anyway, I tried Wellbutrin, but that made me feel like I was on speed. It made my anxiety even worse. I currently take xanax as needed. It works for the anxiety; but I've been having major mood swings since coming off these damn anti-depressants. Everything makes me mad lately. Grrr!! Paxil also worked well for me, but again...sexual side effects. My sex drive still has not come back, and it's been over three months since stopping Effexor.
