Schengen visa can be used to any covered countries, so it can be used to Spain even when it was granted by the Finnish embassy.

The rules for Schengen visas are as follows:
If you intend to visit only one Schengen country, you must apply at the foreign mission of that specific country.
If you intend to visit several Schengen countries, you must apply at the foreign mission of the country which is your main destination, or of the country where you will be staying the longest.
If you intend to visit several Schengen countries but do not have a main destination or will be staying the same amount of time in each of them, you must apply at the foreign mission of the country you will enter first.
If it is determined that your friend is not going to follow the above regulations, it is possible that he will be denied entry into the Schengen Zone. A lot will be determined by your friend's appearance, attitude, behavior, where he is coming from, and what type of passport he is carrying,

If he has a US passport, he doesn't need the visa at all if he's going to stay less than 90 days.
According to the Embassy web site: "US citizens who wish to stay in Spain for tourist or business purposes for up to 90 days do not need a visa. They should travel with a round trip air ticket and a passport valid for a minimum of six months."
According to the Los Angeles Consulate web site: "US citizens with ordinary passports, valid for a minimum of 6 months, who wish to stay in Spain for tourist or business purposes for up to 90 days, do not need a visa."
According to the New York Consulate web site: "US citizens who wish to stay in Spain for tourist or business purposes for up to 90 days do not need a visa. They should travel with a round trip air ticket and a passport valid for a minimum of six months."
Edit in Response to Original Poster's New Information:
In that case, I concur with the poster below me. I would add that I would advise your friend visit Finland first, and then go to Spain from there.
