Generally its for life once diagnosed but you will have regular check-ups to make sure the drugs are working correctly and this could in theory result in reduced dose pills if all is well.

If you are not yet on blood pressure medication or if you just started recently you should act fast to get control of the problem naturally and avoid a lifetime of dependency on these drugs.
A blood pressure prescription does not have to be for life but what happens is that people become dependent on them and it usually ends up that way.
Of course, if there's no alternative it's necessary.
Many people adjust to them okay but for many others the side effects are awful. The most common bp drugs cause tiredness and lethargy. They often make men impotent. These are just some of the most common side effects. You can also have nausea, dizziness and many other problems.
So you should really act to avoid them.
I recommend slow breathing. It has allowed me to turn back my blood pressure at the last minute and avoid starting drugs. I've witnessed other people use slow breathing to get off medication after 20 years, so don't let anyone tell you it can't be done.

My Father has been on tablets for high blood pressure for atleat 30 years. They have only changed his medication once in that time, and that was because a newer drug was more appropriate.
If your husband has tablets there will be a leaflet which lists the possible side effects, however remeber that these are rare and sometimes you have to weigh the dangers on doing nothing against the possible side effects.
Really you should take up your concerns with a doctor as they will be far more informed than most of the people on here.
For what it is worth, apart from a bad knee my dad is in extremely good health and he's nearly 75.

It depends on what is causing your hbp as to whether you can reverse it or not without the medication. If your hbp is related to being overweight or poor lifestyle habits, then yes it can be reversed with a change of diet, exercise & relaxation. There are so many side effects of taking antihypertensive medications but one of the most common side effects is dizzyness (caused by a drop in BP, sometimes too much) & palpitations caused by the already unhealthy heart trying to pump blood through wider arteries & veins (caused by the medication). You really need to ask your doctor or pharmacist these questions to get professional & reliable advice.

Hi, (or high?)
any medication taken for high blood pressure (or, indeed, any other medical problem) should be taken as instructed by your doctor.
Some people will suffer from high blood pressure for life, even with drastic lifestyle changes, other may find their blood pressure returns to a normal level after changing their diet and/or excercise regime.
You will be seeing your doctor fairly regularly if you have been prescribed medication and he/she will normally check your blood pressure, or run other tests when you visit to mointor the condition. If the level falls your medication will be reduced or even stopped altogether.
Do what your doctor advises, especially with regard to your diet and you will quite likely find your levels will drop to acceptable limits (and you'll be healthier overall, too).
Good luck, and don't worry. Your doctor isn't on commission, he/she doesn't get a 'cut' from the drug companies for prescribing unnecessary medications. He/she will want you healthy and fit, so listen to any instructions and follow them.
Some people do suffer from side effects from medicines, if you do, contact your doctor immediately and you may find your medication can be changed for one that doesn't create the side effect.
Good luck and good health,
BobSpain

Not always...although you should check with the doctor before stop taking medication...a low fat diet and losing weight if you are over weight can lower blood pressure.
