In Opera, for the downloads, you can simply right click a link and select 'save to download folder' . This will directly save the file in the download folder which is specified in Tools -> Preferences (Ctrl + F12 or Alt + p) -> Advanced -> Downloads. Now on the right pane choose the path of the folder you want to set as your download folder, so that the files will get downloaded here when you use right click ->save to download folder.

Also you can set preferences for individual file types. Go to the downloads category like i've described above . Now over here select the file type and click 'edit'. Now click save to disk and check the box which says don't ask for folder. Now simply choose the folder to which you want this particular file type to be saved directly without giving you any save as popups or it temporary downloading to the cache.

Here are some of the things you can do to speed up Opera:

1)Disable local network check..especially when your PC ain't connected to a network. Do this by Tools -> Preferences -> advanced -> network -> server name completion (button) ..now uncheck 'look for local networked machine'. Also uncheck name completion if you don't require it.

2)Go to the same network section as above tip , here increase max connections to a server and max total connections , try different numbers, and check whether it has an effect.

3)Clear autocomplete entries from the addy bar, if you have browsed a bit in Opera, you must have noticed, that it gets slow while typing addresses if it has too many entries...since Opera's autocomplete is related to its history, so clearing history will clear autocomplete entries. (Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> History -> Clear) .Also in the same history section, you might wanna decrease the remembered entries in history to say 100 from the default 500.

4)If Opera is slow in starting up, make sure you don't have a large urlfilter.ini file. It resides in your profile folder of Opera. This file gets updated whenever you 'block content'(right click -> block content)Other reasons for slow startup could be large collection of history and cache.

5)Here's a good page that describes how to enhance performance in Opera: http://operawiki.info/OperaPerformance

Opera is blindingly fast, much more than Firefox and IE (Firefox was faster earlier, but it's losing its speed with newer and heavier versions). You will definitely like it. But you don't get any add-ons with it, only stupid little widgets. You can find tips to speed up your computer here:
