English is my birth language and in my youth (a long time ago in a galaxy far far away) learned Spanish before it became such a bone of contention in the US. Had a real opportunity to live and work in Mexico in the non-tourist areas. The Mexicans were friendly and most helpful and I found it easy to learn because the tenses were laid out as neatly as a city street map. The reverse is true of English because of our irregular verbs, sound alikes such as to, too and two and the daily updates of idioms and colloquialisms. Japanese is a pleasant language which I am currently working on as far as speaking, but reading and writing it will tax my tiny mind and allow me first hand knowledge of the difficulties facing new arrivals to America. Wish to learn the Scots language as well due to my heritage, but Lord love a duck, it's hard! I am in favor of total immersion as far as learning a new language; visit the country and make friends with the citizens whom will help if you make an efffort yourself. Good beginning is to get a set of cd's and a microphone for your computer and practice daily. You might get something called EuroTalk by Topics to get you started at least in spoken language of your choice.

If you're asking if it's hard for those whose first language isn't English to write in English, then I'd say probably. I teach English to students whose first language isn't English, and from time to time, I read their writing.

How easy or difficult it is depends on what your first language is and how much writing practice you get.
