I'm not sure what the "wood thing" is in your car. However, unless your subwoofer is made for "free air" operation, then it needs to be in the correct size enclosure. This is because the air pressure inside the box helps keep the subwoofer cone under control. If there's no box, the air pressure "spring" isn't there and the subwoofer can easily be damaged by over-excursion.

Even if the sub is designed for free-air use, it needs to be mounted into a very solid panel. If you just cut a hole in a panel cover for the cargo area and mount it there, much of the energy from the subwoofer will be used up in shaking the panel. The result is a lot of rattling and not much bass.

Finally, the area in the front of the subwoofer has to be completely sealed off from the area in the back of the subwoofer, otherwise cancellation will cause holes in the bass response. In most cars, it's actually more difficult setting up a good free-air system than it would be just to build a box.

The tuning frequency is calculated based on a number of factors. These are a) the internal volume of the enclosure (any displacement and the port is not included) b) the length of the port and c) the cross sectional area of the port. The tuning frequency should be tuned based on what specific sub you are using and what type of sound you are looking for. If the manufacturer recommends 37Hz then tune at that frequency or have a custom design made for your sub that allows for the sound you are looking for. 37Hz is typically a high tuning frequency for most subs so it may not neccissarily be the best for the sound desired. Tuning lower will usually help enhance the sound quality of your sub. You need a cross sectional area that is large enough for the sub you are using. If the cross sectional area is too small you will have port noise. Good Luck!!!

You have to put these in a subwoofer box. If you put two 10" subs in the back panel of your car. It will completely ruin the back of your car. Even though you don't want REALLY deep bass, you need a box for them to function correctly. The back panel in your car is only made for SPEAKERS, not SUBS. The box itself really isn't that expensive. You can find them on eBay or at your local audio store.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Need help trying to find the specific box you need? Just search "Dual 10" sub box" on eBay.
