It depends on one's definition of liberal, and to which God they're referring. If it's the Christian God, then again, it depends on the definition of "liberal."
It's my belief that there are three kinds of liberal:
1. Fiscal liberalism. It takes the form of wanting all people to share wealth equally, or at least to somewhat level the playing field so that there aren't so many "working poor." (I actually lean towards this persuasion, though I don't believe communism or socialism truly work. To adopt aspects of one of those, or both, CAN work, but not to go all the way with one or the other.)
2. Progressive liberalism. Progressive liberalism is the fight for equality for ALL, regardless of race, sex, sexual orientation, or religion. This is not immoral in the least, and I don't think it disagrees with Christian doctrine.
3. Then there's "true" liberalism. THIS liberalism is the kind that is truly FOR things that according to the Christian doctrine are wrong. These liberals are FOR abortion, not just the choice, but actually see nothing morally wrong with abortion. They equate it to something like cutting one's toenails, or trimming one's hair. That's just one example.
I think (using scripture as my basis for this) that God would have a problem with the immorality that runs rampant in what has become modern liberalism. But the other two, absolutely not. I think they're fairly close to the way Jesus taught.
I'll end this with one of my favorite quotes, I don't know where I heard it (actually, the first time I heard it was when I myself said it, lol) but here it is:
"Conservatives forget that Jesus taught 'Judge not, lest ye be judged.' Liberals forget that Jesus taught, 'Go and sin no more.' "

Thank you for the additional details. It gave just enough info so I can better give my viewpoint on this issue. I believe that God looks at more than just the surface issues, but looks at the intentions of the heart. In fact, looking beyond those issues is why Jesus often would judge his disciples and the Pharisees harsher than he would those who were the sinners.
In looking at your question, I think that we have to look at each situaiton, each circumstance on a case by case basis. Some situations definitely warrant protecting those people and taking a moral stand on certain issues. But it all depends on the situation. Ultimately, what would be the cost involved in taking a stand against that particular issue.
Look at how people who take a stand to protect the unborn are villified nowadays. They are seen as narrow minded and uncompassionate because they feel that protecting the baby over the mother's rights is wrong. Is it cowardly and self-serving not to take a stand? Again, I think we have to evaluate the stance and the cost. In certain cases, yes it would be cowardly, especially if someone is seriously harmed. Other times, it may be too much of a cost to take a stance, such as opposing a government's cruelty (such as the man who stood up to the tanks in Tiannamen Square).

Words are so easily twisted and misconstrued. If you are having a debate either side is capable of 'winning' regardless of being correct in any true sense of the word reality. Your coworker used a technique called 'talking points'.
I found the claims made to be invalid. 1. Indecisive: When you are trying to find a way to govern a vast amount of people all while maintaining personal freedoms you best come to decisions after well thought out discussions with all involved. Why? If any one person wants to live their life as they chose that person must protect the freedom of all. 2. Protect the vulnerable: Liberals are known for their support of; social programs, the arts, civic participation, accessible education, workers rights including: workers compensation, minimum wage, maximum working hours and many other great improvements to the life of a working person, and in consequence their families. Health care for all and access to education for all is also something liberals stand behind. Liberals are against the government infringing on your personal pursuit of happiness. We tend to support another’s right to practice their faith, or lack thereof.
We like for big business to pay their share. After all any successful company used the government for: educated workers, roads, postal system, electricity, communications...
Big business should pay a fair percentage of the taxes, low income, minimum wage and middle class workers should not pay a larger percentage of their income in taxes than a corporation.
Liberals are more likely to please the teachings of the god in most of the world’s religions: responsibility to others, doing your share for the community, and taking care of/being good stewards of our natural resources.

Liberals want to help the poor, the elderly, the sick, the young.. ALL of God's people. Is that evil?
You might have a squable about abortion or gay rights, but what has a bigger impact on society?
I hardly at ALL think Jesus would stand behind conservative values of "personal responsibility" and supply-side economics.

I am a liberal person that believes in God. I can not help it. It is just me. Do I think I try to avoid some important issues? NO. I just think that we should lighten up on some things.
Do I have some strong conservative views? Maybe one or two. Does having liberal views make me evil? Who are they to say I am evil?
People are losing it. People are losing the whole theme of what this country was SUPPOSEDLY built upon. Freedom. There was never really true freedom from the beginning but you would think that we would be getting closer to it but we are getting further away from it.
George Bush and his posse can listen in on our private calls!
Certain states are trying to ban baggy pants! WHAT!
You can not say what you want to say on national tv when they have regular tv shows with people simulating sex on fox during the early evening. What happened to freedom of speech?
They are trying to rate Disney movies with smoking rated R...What!
Sorry, but strict conservative views are limiting our freedom.

Some of us choose not to bear or bother others with what we believe because truth is many are vulnerable and unable to choose a choice... Within what I say lies what I believe for it is my word...Intelligence beyond Complexities is only a thought process away. There is no middle to any two separate entities, your either good or evil, your either wise or not... The plain simple answer is 1.

I tell you what, this God people go on about has sure got a lot of time on his hands.
Now he's going to be available to police our thinking on a wide range of issues, and punish us if we are weak and cowardly.
No wonder folk pray all the time for salvation from this god, seeing as how weak is pretty much a pre-requisite for human.
Believers must be terrified every time they don't say "No way aunty maud those stripes make your backside look like a truck" instead of 'why not try something a little more slimming'. Ooooohhh, moral cowardice, straight to hell.
Next time, just insult liberals straight out without feeling the need to bring your god into it, why doncha.

God is not judgemental - we are. It gracefully allows for everything to happen.
We form our opinions and views and impose them on others who lack responsibility for themselves and others.
Constantly, we test our ability to justify our every action and motive without looking what harm it brings to other beings.

As far as I'm concerned, the liberal views have brought this society down, the proof, look at the school system.
My daughter goes to the same school I did, and things are WAY different than when I was there, and it has nothing to do with the change of times
It has to do with the parents and the laws that have changed.
Look at the legal system, who goes to jail, and who does not.
