no, the major draw of religion is that it takes away fear and doubt. we all at some subliminal level fear death and pain, and religion tells you you can conquer both. we all agonize about some big decisions in life, and religion takes that away - all the big decisions have been made for you. nothing to fear, nothing to worry about. that's the appeal.

At the last church I attended regularly
(Evangelical, bible-believing)
of those I could trust and approach discretely with my difficulties with the faith, I discovered that about a third did not believe but said and acted appropriately in order to maintain what they did believe in and value: the sense of belonging and support in a community.

It wasn't an option I was happy with, even though I could understand their position.

I think it is a very large part of it. It might even become a cause of failure for the Mega churches. They are getting so large that the community effect gets lost.

Yes, my religion doesn't change me as a person, it just provides a store of strength to be the person I want to be in fellowship with other like minds.

yes i think so - belonging to a common thought/idea and having thoses beliefs in common - its just a shame tho that it gets taken to the extreme and then used to actually seperate and insite hatred towards other groups.

No. People like privacy, close-knit family, and repitition, routine. We are creatures of habit. When someone or something drastically alters our habitat, we become vulnerable to cults like, christianity (the religion) islam, scientology, etc....
