I am assuming you are talking about the U.S.? I have never seen anything wrong with a person who believes in Christ using his values to help make good decisions when in a political office. It is when we forget those values that we get into trouble.
DID YOU KNOW? As you walk up the steps to the building which houses the U.S Supreme Court you can see near the top of the building a row of the world's law givers and each one is facing one in the middle who is facing forward with a full frontal view .. it is Moses and he is holding the Ten Commandments!
DID YOU KNOW?
There are Bible verses etched in stone all over the Federal Buildings and Monuments in Washington, D.C.
DID YOU KNOW?
James Madison, the fourth president, known as "The Father of Our Constitution" made the following statement:
"We have staked the whole of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God."
DID YOU KNOW?
Patrick Henry, that patriot and Founding Father of our country said:
"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians, not on religions but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ".
DID YOU KNOW?
Every session of Congress begins with a prayer by a paid preacher, whose salary has been paid by the taxpayer since 1777.
DID YOU KNOW?
Fifty-two of the 55 founders of the Constitution were members of the established orthodox churches in the colonies.
DID YOU KNOW?
Thomas Jefferson worried that the Courts would overstep their authority and instead of interpreting the law would begin making law . an oligarchy, the rule of few over many.
DID YOU KNOW?
The very first Supreme Court Justice, John Jay, said:
"Americans should select and prefer Christians as their rulers."
How, then, have we gotten to the point that everything we have done for 220 years in this country is now suddenly wrong and unconstitutional? Is Jesus and his teachings outdated? Look around you the more we take "god" out of our lives the more senless killings and all kinds of evil behaviour has taken his place. But you won't ever understand that I don't think....do what you have to do in the name of "progressive thinking" lol

I think most of the answers are from the point of view 'what can be changed in the system'. I think we should look at it from the voters point of view. I am assuming the question is about India where caste and religion are more and more part of the election agenda of a party rather than anything constuctive for the economy and welfare of the country.
I dont think we can stop that. But we definately can make the voter more aware of his/her responsibilty as a citizen. If citizens understand what is democracy all about they would be better able to choose people to represent them. They themselves would be able to weed out the religious agendas and concentrate an vote more on the economic agenda of a party. Education starting in schools about 'what it means to be a democracy, what it means to coexist with other religions, what it means to be a secular democracy' would be helpful to create this awareness

There is nothing we can do, the United States was built with a foundation under God, and God is not about religion, my heavenly father is a loving God. Now us humans have a way to make sure they give religion a bad name, why because they are human like everybody else, born sinners and will continue to make mistakes to understand our purpose here on earth, might not pertain to everyone. We would not be so protected if we didn't have the faithful believers praying night and day for this world and our people for a better place to live in. Who knows how the United States would have done without God, thanks to the men who agreed on keeping God in everything that has to do with politics, as we see in our money, "IN GOD WE TRUST"...

Be careful what you ask for. Our country is based on the principle that "all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights". That is the most powerful protection there is. It means that your right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness cannot be taken away by any government because it does not come from the government.
Socialism is way different. The individual means nothing. Everything is done for the good of society as a whole. You have no individual rights.
It is socialists that are doing everything they can to get the moral absolutism that protects the individual out of America. If they ever succeed in getting that moral absolutism (religion, God, the Creator) out of our government we will cease to be free.

no, and you shouldn't because there is nothing wrong with it. A Christian/Jew/Muslim is just as much a citizen and has the right to act on their beliefs as an atheist/anarchist is. They all have the right to act and vote on their believes. If a Christian is elected to an office that doesn't mean we're "Christians" are forcing our religion on non-believers, just as it would be if an atheist was elected to an office he wouldn't be forcing his
beliefs on us.
We collectively are the voice of the people and this is where the true meaning of the constitutional concept of separation of church and state comes into play. Our government shall never interfere in our religious beliefs. But if our government which is elected of the people, by the people, and for the people have a religious belief or not, so be it either way. Because government is of the people.
Sorry...I know this is beyond the scope of your question but ultimately this is what your question would come down to...I've had this debate many times! =)
Thanks for you patience.

Presently, mixing religion/caste and politics has been the best recipe for politicians. If that receipe has to change, then some other formula will emerge.
I think this recipe has been time tested for politicians in India and will continue to play this cards atleats for another few eleections.

You can't stop it, as people are always influenced by their religious beliefs. A persons religion shapes their morals and ideals and they tend to go with legislation that promotes these morals and ideals. To agyanee, I don't know where you live, but in the United States if you tried that you would be violating their right to freedom of religion. You can't tell someone that they can't practice their religion just because they took public office.

In light of the fact that most of the Founding Fathers were Bible-believing Christian (as opposed to Deists, as some mistakenly imply) and, in light of the fact that the Founding Fathers believed that the first prerequisite for holding office was that one be a Bible-believing Christian, I would say that nothing need be done.
Even if you reject the truth of the above statement, it is ridiculous to expect someone who is a Christian to lay their faith aside when serving in office. If they do not decide based, at least partially, on their faith, then they are deciding against the very principles that got them where they are. If that is the case, then they are not very principled and you wouldn't want them in office, anyway.

Well,
We could start by changing the way money is printed and coined. That would entail a complete change in our system but it would certainly make people that are against all religions that might uplift and encourage and give hope to a sad state of affairs we are in ....happy. That would be a big start. Then we could change the way the courts are run. No swearing on the bible. And maybe burning all bibles.........etc.etc..................
