Deep vein thrombosis
A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot (thrombus) that develops in a deep vein, usually in the lower leg. Deep vein thrombosis can cause pain in the leg and can potentially lead to complications.
Most of the time DVT's are harmless, especially if you are being treated with medication (heparin or warfarin). However, there is a potentially deadly side effect that you need to watch out for (pulmonary embolism).
We were taught in nursing school NEVER to massage an area which is affected by DVT due to the chance of it dislodging and causing an embolism.
Please seek medical help immediately if you experience chest pain or shortness of breath, as these are all signs of a pulmonary embolism.

During prolonged periods of sitting or standing, your blood may collect in your legs and ankles. The leg veins stretch easily and may become enlarged by the pressure of the pooled blood. This can cause a dull, aching pain. While this isn't normal or acceptable, it's not an emergency. On the other hand, if you experience pain that is sharp or continuous, contact your doctor or go to an emergency room immediately. You may have a very serious condition called deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot in the central vein in your leg. This is the condition responsible for "Economy Class Syndrome" in which passengers cramped in coach class on lengthy airplane flights have developed DVT's.

DVT is better known as Deep Vein Thrombosis. It's when you get a blood clot lodged in a vein. Pain and swelling is a common sign and symptom. You'll probably need to go to your physician and get blood work drawn. And do not, I repeat, do not rub your ankle or calf (in case it would be a clot), you could dislodge it and have more serious problems.

Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body. Most deep vein clots occur in the lower leg or thigh. They also can occur in other parts of the body.
If a clot in a vein breaks off and travels through your bloodstream, it can lodge in your lung. This is called pulmonary embolism , which is a very serious condition that can cause death. Blood clots in the thigh are usually more likely to break off and cause pulmonary embolism than clots in the lower leg or other parts of the body.
A blood clot also can occur in veins that are close to the surface of the skin. This type of blood clot is called superficial venous thrombosis or phlebitis . Blood clots in superficial veins are not dangerous because they can’t travel to the lungs.
