In my opinion, an atheist is one who does not believe that someone or something created the universe. In other words, he/she does not invoke a creationist when asked about the origin of the universe. He/She believes that religion is human made.
A believer is the opposite. A believer does not have to belong to a specific religion, but he/she does invokes a creationist (ex. God) when asked about the universe. He/She believes that there is a being watching our every move, judging our actions.
Please respond, believer or atheist. If you have better definitions, please state. Remember, this question is not to argue who or what is better. I just want to get a feel of the percentage of people under both categories. Thanks.

I am not sure where I would be placed here. I believe that ''someone'' or ''something'' created us and the universe. A God if you will. Anyone who thinks we come from nothing and says it seems logical did not even think about the matter.
However, I do not believe in the God of religions, and I definitely do not think he is just, fair, and loving as they claim. If God, whatever that may be, had real power over our actions and how the universe works, then he is a complete moron and the worst dictator you can possibly hear about.
Why would a loving God mess the lives of so many people up? Why would he create evil people that mess up the lives of others? And what about evil people themselves? If it is God who made them evil, what is their fault? Religious people say it is Satan who does all this... Why would God allow freaking Satan to do so? Why would he even choose Satan to be Satan when it is him who created him? Isn't it unfair to make Satan that evil? Isn't he supposed to have the power to do anything? When you ask those who believe in religions, they start talking about the ''God is testing us'' crap. If he really is testing us, why wouldn't he show us what we would get when we pass or fail?
On the other side, I really wish I could believe in a loving God and a heaven. I just do not understand how we can just die and lose all our loved ones. I can not understand how you can just ''stop working'' and leave everything behind. I do not want it to go this way.

Being an atheist is so much more than not believing in a creator. I don't believe in a creator or a being of any kind that is supernatural and has anything to do with controling mankind. I do believe religion is human made, a way for a special group to control others by feeding into man's inate desire to KNOW the unknowable.
I'm an atheist, by the way.

When scientists don't know something — like why the universe came into being or how the first self-replicating molecules formed — they admit it. Pretending to know things one doesn't know is a profound liability in science. And yet it is the life-blood of faith-based religion. One of the monumental ironies of religious discourse can be found in the frequency with which people of faith praise themselves for their humility, while claiming to know facts about cosmology, chemistry and biology that no scientist knows. When considering questions about the nature of the cosmos and our place within it, atheists tend to draw their opinions from science. This isn't arrogance; it is intellectual honesty.

Atheist, but I do believe in metaphor. Invoking a creator doesn't necessarily mean one believes in an actual or personal God.

believer here. We had to come from somwhere. I battle with this notion each day. I have a PhD in science and yes, I still believe we were created. By whom I'm not sure, but we did not happen by accident. In another 50-100 years, we humands, if we do not destroy ourselves will be able to create and fully manipulate life forms. It's destined and will happen in your children's lifetime.
I fully believe the ultimate goal of mankind is to achieve immortality and interspace travel to other worlds.
