You would be very stupid to go out to ask. A) If there was a homicidal maniac on the loose would you really want to open your door for any reason, except mabye if an officer came to the door to inform you of what was going on. B) the police are obviously quite busy so they will probably not appreciate questions at the moment. You could try an internet search for news in your local area like check the webpage of a local paper or TV new station or maybe check on the TV itself but at this time of the night you may not find much. Just make sure you doors windows are locked, calm down, and wait to catch it on the morning news. I do understand you are nervous and concerned but the safest thing to do it to stay secure in your house, if the police feel that people need to know what it going on for safety reasons they will come to tell you.

Look in your phonebook and find the number of your local police station. They may be able to help with some general information.
If there is a high level of danger the police will announce it by door-to-door knocks or loud speakers.

Stay inside and turn on the local news or check local news websites. DO NOT call the police dept cause if something is going on, they'll be too busy to sit there and explain it to you. Just sit tight and lock the doors.

call your local police department's non emergency number and tell them you are scared and afraid this will wake your children. they probably won't give you any information but it won't hurt to try.sometime dispatcher will slip up and give a piece of info or it might be something that they can tell to get the neighbors help (like a missing person search) who knows. other wise you might have to wait for the paper tomorrow or the next day. good luck

Tune into your local radio station, and watch your local TV station, they will probably have updates on what is happening. Good idea not to leave your home and go outside.

Call the police and ask. Tell them you are a little scared and want to know if you are safe. They will tell you. Otherwise, it will likely be on tomorrow's news.

Why call the police? They're there. Lock your doors and windows and stay with your kids.
