Why do I ride? Probably the best answer to that is that I've never completely lost that inner childhood sense of wonder and adventure that comes with exploring the world under my own power. I walk, run, hike, ski, canoe, kayak, swim, skate, and bike. Of course, to see the most in a given time period, there's nothing like a bike!

I've been riding a bike of some sort for nearly 40 years.
- The first one was a brand new 1969 single-speed green Raleigh, that I took the fenders from the same day as I lost the training wheels.
- In 1977, I obtained a five-speed Raleigh touring bike ... a deep rust brown color, which made it difficult to know when things were really rusting out.
- In 1982, I got my first real 'road' bike, a 14-speed steel tube Bianchi Imola with Campagnolo drivetrain and a real Italian leather racing saddle. The color was royal purple - it made me feel like the king of the road!
- In 1990 (after I'd wrecked my second Bianchi), I got my first true mountain bike ... I say "true" because that first single speed got to see a lot of the world, and it wasn't all paved roads!. The bike was a Haro Vector ... no suspension, 24 speeds, cro-moly frame and forks, Shimano drivetrain.
- In 2004, I moved to my current road bike, the Felt 55 compact design. Aluminum tubes with carbon seatpost, front forks, and chainstays. Shimano DuraAce drivetrain, with FSA carbon compact crankset.
- Finally, in 2006, the Haro packed it in ... and I ended up with a Gary Fisher Tassajara Disc.

I still have the Haro, by the way ... I'm rebuilding the freewheel and cassette by hand, since the parts are no longer available anywhere.

These days, I ride the road bike (Felt) 36-40 miles a day (18-20 each way to work), with longer rides of 62-100 miles on at least one day most weekends. Add to that my mountain biking (on the Gary Fisher): evening trail rides of 8-10 miles most weekdays and tours by the lake on the other day of the weekend, and I probably add another 60-80 miles a week to the road bike totals.

And I'm just an amateur rider!

I ride for fun and fitness. I have a Giant XTC4 SE. My typical rides will be about 20 + miles and I will usually do 2 - 3 of these per week. I also have a Raleigh road bike. This is good for poping down the shops on and getting a smooth peddle action. Will do about 10 - 20 pw on this.

I have had my present bicycle since August. Before that I had a Trek 820.

Luck

I started riding because it looked like fun. I kept riding because it relieved college stress and kept me sane. By the time I got a job in a bike shop, I was hooked. It became a major part of how I defined myself.

I swore I would never be anything but a mountain biker until I rode an MS-150 on one. Then I bought a road bike and took three hours per day off of the previous year's ride time.

Now I have an older Ellsworth Isis frame with Manitou Black Super forks, RaceFace/SRAM setup and Avid discs for the dirt. My road bike is a custom Dean titanium El Diente frame with full Campagnolo Chorus, FSA carbon cranks, and Campy Proton wheels.

I currently ride over 100 miles a week, and am in my 17th year as a serious cyclist.

Hey,

I ride a bike 1) For my fitness, 2)Because I enjoy it, 3)It's easier to get around in the city and 4)For the social aspect.

I have a Specialized Tarmac Road bike. It is a speed machine, and i ride it nearly every day. I have a GT Avalanche 2.0 mountain bike that has a kid seat for my daughter, but getting a bit cold in Australia for that now.

I ride at least 40km's a day during the week and try for about 150km's on a weekend. I guess that works out to about 400kms a week.

I raced BMX when i was younger, then got back into riding about 15 months ago. Now I race criteriums aswell and really enjoy it.

I bought my bike as another way to try to keep in shape, I know lots of people who ride and I try to always ride with them. The local bike club has several rides a week. I just bought a new Trek 1000 WSD and I love it! We usually average about 15 miles every time we ride, although I am still slow at this point so once I get faster I am sure my ride distances will increase!

I love the feeling of the wind. Better than a convertable because you go slower and can see stuff. I ride a Motobecane 30 speed road bike when I'm in the states. I only get to ride between 50-100 miles per week and only during the warm months in upstate NY.

I own a Giant XTC840. Quite a good hard trail mountain bike with 24 gears.
i ride it everyday to go to school, an average of 7 kilometers per day, and I take on the weekend (depending on the weather) for more than 100 Km distance rides.
I live in Sapporo, Japan

Presumably you mean that either you were riding on the footway rather than on the carriageway or that this particular high street is pedestrianised. Both are illegal - bicycles are vehicles and so it is illegal to ride them in areas which are for pedestrians only. It has hard to believe that you did not know this - it seems to me that only a child would not know it, and children cannot be given fixed penalty notices anyway. There is no point in appealing since you have committed the offence. Pay the fine and ride properly in future.

I have a 2007 coyote bootleg mtb. I ride for at least 2 hours every day and often ride up into the mountains for a trek. I ride my bike because it keeps me fit and healthy, I enjoy it and the mountain biking community is so much friendlier than in other sports

There is nothing like taking a backroad adventure on my bike, it's peaceful and relaxing.

I try to do anywhere from 90-120mi a week, but I don't always get to go as far depending on weather and my motivation. I've been riding for almost 2 years and I ride a Felt F5C, the best damn bike ever!
