A friend had three duckling dumped in his small pond outside his home. They're still in the fluffy stage but they have a black stripe up the bill, black on their heads, and yellow feet. Can anyone tell us what kind of duck they might be?

do not use the address with i7 as it's shown here because there are too many dots after jpg. please enter it into your search without the dots at the end.

They sound like they could be Mallards. You might ask at a local farm supply store. They sell ducklings and chicks this time of year, and should know.

I hope your friend enjoys them. Ducks can be great fun to watch, especially babies as they grow up.

Just a suggestion, if they can be caught, it might be a good idea to keep them in a covered pen, at least at night and when nobody is around to watch them, since it sounds like they are orphaned. Hawks, owls, coyotes, weasels and other predators would find them tastey morsels and easy prey.

Best of luck with them, Lili

I might hazard a guess as mallards, but if you take one to your local zoo and ask or better yet, look up your Game and Parks division and tell them about it, I bet you could find out pretty fast. You could also type in the name of your state in your search engine followed by the word 'ducks', maybe you can find some better info that way. Best of luck to you.
